Exclamation Mark

On the page is says that an exclamation mark appears over the partner Pokémon if you and the Pokémon are facing down, side by side. I was standing facing left, with my Pokémon behind me also facing left (looking at me), and the exclamation mark appeared above me once, and my partner twice. However, when it appeared above my partner, it was for Pokémon I either hadn't seen or hadn't caught, so could this be the real factor for whether the exclamation mark appears above you of the partner? Good rod in HG/SS

In HeartGold, at least, the Good Rod isn't found in the Olivine Café, but rather in the building above the Pokécenter in Olivine. Eckankar 10:48, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

This might help with Consecutive Fishing math

Ok, so I caught my first Shinny through chain fishing the other day, wasn't even trying, forgot all about chain fishing until I caught a shinny male Poliwhirl. I was actually after its evolved form, Politoad before it popped up. I figure this was after 20 attempts to get a normal Politoad, the exact amount i cannot say but I am certain of 20.

The second Shinny I got was the next day, which was a male Relicanth. I did however keep track, and was surprised about how soon I caught it. After 10 consecutive bites I reeled in the shinny living fossil Pokémon, however before that I caught 2 Seadras back to back so maybe that did something to the chain.

The third shinny was a female Alomomola which was caught after 38 consecutive bites.

I'm not sure if any of that can help the more math gifted researchers come up with the numbers, but here it is all the same. Good luck. Yamitora1 (talk) 14:46, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Problem is it's entirely random, and some people are luckier than others. Also for future reference, there is only one "n" in shiny.----BigBadBatter 21:46, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

List of Pokémon obtainable by fishing?

Is there a list somewhere detailing which Pokémon can be obtained via fishing in each game, with details on in-game locations/rods used? I'm wondering because I want to know what shinies can be obtained through chain fishing. Randomwaffle23 (talk) 02:07, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

I created a page revolving around all fishing encounters. Right now, it's only about Pokémon in Generation I that can be fished up by Old and Good Rods. Source on Triple-Obstacle Chain Fishing Gen VI (XY)

"If three sides are blocked, every cast will hook a Pokémon."

I have had several instances in various locations where a cast did not yield a Pokemon. It timed out and the message "Nothing seems to be biting..." appeared. This happens with two rocks adjacent a tile and a land (even if the land isn't reachable by the trainer) or three rocks adjacent a tile. This happens while fishing while surfing (the bobber is two tiles away from the trainer) and while on land (the bobber is one tile away from the trainer). This happens when casting over a rock (while surfing).

I'd like to see a source on this either way. I don't have a capture card so trying to hold my phone and surf to do this would be a pain, but if there's no source anyone has, I'll go ahead and record I suppose.

In short, the source is: experience. I did a total of 800 casts (in 2 or 3 different places, and most with the Super Rod but 100 with the Old Rod) in places where the bobber was closed in on three sides and never got "Nothing seems to be biting..." during those casts.

I have recently discovered that, I think land can only close in a side if it's a beach; at the beach, the walkable land and surfable water are *right* next to each other, but in other places, there's a 1-tile, unwalkable and unsurfable border between them (normally you jump over it when you use Surf; you can explicitly test this border if you walk to the edge of land, take 1 step back, and then try to fish towards the border—it will fail).

(Also, FWIW and perhaps related to that border: the bobber always lands 2 tiles away from the Trainer (even diagonally).)

What exactly do you mean, "casting over a rock"? And are you saying that's the only time you experience this discrepancy with the 100% claim?

You don't have to record a video, if you can just snap a good picture of your position and your cast, that might be informative enough. Or it might enable someone else (like me) to test that spot themselves. Tiddlywinks (talk) 03:31, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Here's an image of casting over a rock, and another place where I don't cast over a rock (this is what I was talking about with a one-tile forward cast.) These rocks are found on Route 15 in Kalos.

I run into the "Not even a nibble..." message on average around a dozen consecutive casts in these spots. Is there anything I'm doing wrong by removing items from my Pickup and Thief Pokemon between battles? Anything wrong with using O-powers (PP restoration for Thief)? Or must you have a Suction Cups/Sticky Hold and have three obstacles for the bite to be guaranteed? If it's the latter, the article does not make that clear at all.

Hm, I didn't think you could cast directly over a rock like that, I'll have to double-check that (maybe it's just on Lapras).

Your problem is actually in your choice of spot entirely (if they're all like those two pics). Like I said above, I just recently discovered that in spots like those, the game doesn't recognize an obstacle on the third/landward side. I originally did most of my testing around beaches, and there the land can count as an obstacle.

A good example spot with three sides is if you go to the northwest point of Cyllage City (on the beach) and then Surf into the water and try fishing in any of those alcoves on the north between the big rocks. Tiddlywinks (talk) 01:57, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Gen VII Fishing

I guess it makes sense only if they're the same across all locations. If they depend on the location (the way the Pokémon do), mentions on the location pages seem more appropriate. Nescientist (talk) 22:56, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Bubbling spot

What are the odds of finding a "Bubbling spot" ? The fishing odds are different, but what are the conditions to find a bubbling spot ? Geographik0903 (talk) 18:02, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

I may be wrong, but as far as I have surmised, each area has one predetermined bubbling spot. It stops bubbling after you fish at it, and starts bubbling again when you leave the area and return. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 18:43, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Generation II encounters

The Generation II encounter lists are gigantic and dominate the page, but don't add much value. I think just a single table, explaining which category each location falls into, would be much more compact and useful.
