Not on the DVD Box Set.

It's not included on the DVD Box Set for Pokémon Indigo League Volume 3, which really surprised me.

Please tell me it's included on the first volume if the Box Set for Orange Island. TheBlazikenMaster 01:09, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Never mind, I got it on the Orange Islands DVD Box Set, I was obviously confused. TheBlazikenMaster 10:39, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Why is this episode listed on Season 2? The official airings have always had the Season 1 opening, meaning this is a Season 1 episode. ----HoennMaster 04:29, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Where is it listed as season 2? There's nothing about "seasons" on the page. I think it goes by the Japanese series, anyway. --Martonimos((Argh|Blargh)) 04:37, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

On the list of Original Series episodes it is listed under the Orange Islands.

----HoennMaster 07:48, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Well it is strange. Now I am confused why this episode is part of my Orange Islands DVD Box Set instead of the 3rd volume of the Inidgo DVD Box Set. TheBlazikenMaster 08:57, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Well its weird to me because some websites say it is first season while some say second season. Im very confused.--Pokemon22495 14:01, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

For the most part, people consider it a Season 1 episode.

----HoennMaster 14:23, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

This episode obviously is part of season 2: new japanese OP, part of the US DVDs of season 2, new english OP, at least on the DVDs, and the plot like the japanese episode title "サラタウン!あらたなるたびだち" hints (→ beginn of a new journey and a adventure). -Bernd 17:54, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

About the "error" of "Pidgeot" and "Pidgeotto" cry: This was not an error, it is because Ash's Pidgeotto is voiced in both Japanese and American versions by Megumi Hayashibara, and Pidgeotto's Japanese name is Pigeon (ピジョン), and Pidgeot's Japanese name is Pijiotto (ピジョット, who is pronunced like "Pidgeotto"), so Pidgeotto's cry before evolving was "Pigeon!", and after evolving "Pijiotto"! Start of Orange Islands or end of Indigo

Place your arguments here. It's difficult to tell where season two starts because sources conflict each other. Pokémon's official website says "Princess Vs. Princess" is the start of the Orange Island saga, believe it or not. Also people don't consider this the start of the Orange Island saga because Ash is still in Kanto. I'm more on the fence about this and would like to remain neutral. --ケンジガール 22:40, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Why can't it be both? Truthseeker4449 22:54, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Kenji, Pokémon.com lists seasons by Production. Season 2 is technically the second half of Kanto and the first half of the Orange Islands, Season 3 is second half of Orange Islands and all of Johto Journeys. That's why they list it that way. As for this episode, it should be listed as a Kanto episode because it is strongly associated with the Kanto saga, not the Orange Islands. I would say a big indication of this is the fact that the only a small part of the episode revolves around the Orange Islands, and that is about a three minute intro to the GS Ball and them leaving. The rest of the episode is divided between the Pokémon League party and the Fearow battle, and the whole episode takes place in Kanto. I realize that it is always with the Season 2 DVDs, but it's association is usually with Kanto. The US airings support that. This episode was aired with all the other Kanto episodes, while there was about a month's break AFTER this episode before the Orange Islands started. I'm sure they are others I forgot about but this is why I can think of right now. --HoennMaster 21:00, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

I know about pokemon.com's episode guide - their seasons always have around 50 eps - the other way the first two seasons have around 80 and 35 eps. Reason, why I'd say this ep belongs to season 2:

  1. the japanese episode title: "サラタウン!あらたなるたびだち!" => start of a new adventure
  2. the japanese episode got a new opening (ライバル!)
  3. it's the first episode of the season 2 US DVDs
  4. there's no reason why this should be the last episode of season 1
  5. when using the argument with the first tv airing and the first OP: bulba's EP083 also used Pokémon Theme (while the DVD version most likely uses Pokémon World) and bulba's EP084 uses Pokémon World, which would make EP084 as the first episode of season 2 and EP083 as the last episode of season 1.
  6. the US DVDs can be seen as a fix of the tv airing
  7. the plot, start of a new arc (like the japanese title already hints): "Ash is given an errand by Professor Oak to travel to the Orange Archipelago and retrieve a mysterious Poké Ball from Professor Ivy."
  8. Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands often refers to EP081 (e.g. at "Important events"), while Pokémon: Indigo League refers rarely, nearly never, to EP081 - for obvious reasons
  9. even if this is no argument ('cause wp often is wrong too), wp also counts EP081 as the first ep of season 2.

Wikipedia goes by the DVD releases and they aren't a reference anyway. Japan got a new opening with this episode but the US didn't so that point doesn't really work. Not to mention opening themes are changed at random points in Japan so that again makes that point no that valid. As for the US openings, the opening theme did change at first probably because 4Kids didn't want to change up the franchise. On the DVD's this episode does indeed have Season 2's opening, but in TV airings it often uses Season 1's opening. Again, the DVD's. Yes it is the first episode of the OI box set, but so? That could be just how TPCi likes to put it. "there's no reason why this should be the last episode of season 1" is not a valid argument, neither is "the US DVDs can be seen as a fix of the tv airing" because there is nothing to suggest it was a mistake. The plot barely revolves around the OI. Half of the episode alone is a party celebrating the end of the Pokémon League - a Kanto plot. And again I stress, US airings took a break AFTER this episode, not after EP079. --HoennMaster 17:53, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Then, what's with later/new airings of EP082 & EP083? Do they use the first OP too like they had during their first airing? If so, then EP084 is the first EP of season 2 - accourding to OPs. Resp. the break during the first airing is no valid argument either - and was there any break during later airings? At least their should be a compromise like "final episode of the Indigo League arc and the first episode in the Orange Islands arc", 'cause of US DVDs, where it is the first EP of season 2 - and you can't deny that - and because of the plot - and you can't deny that either. --Bernd 13:19, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Those episodes used the Season 1 opening during their original airings but since then have used the Season 2 opening. A break during the seasons is actually a perfectly valid argument. If you know how American broadcasting works you would know that breaks between seasons is a very common thing on American television. And no, I don't believe it is an Orange Islands episode at all because barely any of the episode revolves around the Orange Islands. Half of the episode is just the Pokémon League party, while most of the second half is the Fearow problem. Only about 3 minutes actually involves the Orange Islands. --HoennMaster 16:17, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
I know (more or less) about the season system (where I live, there are commonly also breaks between seasons). A break would be an argument, but - at least as far as I know - there was only a break after this episode during the first airing and when arguing with the first airing, then one could argue that according to the Openings EP084 is the first EP of season 2. Thus - in my opinion - the first (us) airing is no valid argument in this case. | About later us airings: regardless whether the information about is right or not, I see no way to verify or falsify it. | About the plot: 1-9 min: party & rocket gang; 10-11 min: mentioning of the orange archipel, Ivy, special pokeball, beginn of the new journey; 11-19: bird attack (much like in EP001 where Ash's first journey begins) & bird story. But: the party isn't as import for season 1 as the set off is for season 2, which makes this episode's plot more important for season 2 than for season 1. First season without the party? Well, no real problem. Second season with a new journey but without the begin/aim of it? Pretty much a contradiction. --Bernd 15:46, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
At this point I'm pretty sure you are only reading what you want because I've mentioned the issue with the openings already, they were corrected in later openings. As for how the seasons air, the first run is pretty much the most important run because later runs are often in any order that the channel wants. --HoennMaster 20:52, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I say keep it the way it is. HoennMaster is correct--SandmanDP 20:54, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
While I think it does have more in common with the Kanto saga, I'm going to have to say it should be considered part of the Orange League, due to the Japanese opening being The Rivals. Vuvuzela2010 Δ 21:12, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I think this episode is both, really. It is the end of Indigo and the start of the Orange Islands. It's a transitional episode not meant to really belong to either. If pushed to pick, I'd say it's a Kanto episode. The final episode of the second Kanto arc ends with Ash leaving for a new destination, and begins with him arriving there. I think this is the same thing. Crystal Talian 21:24, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

I made the edit today to change this to the Orange Islands for obvious reasons. The opening is no longer the "Indigo League" opening, and it is the Orange Islands opening, so it should be in the orange islands Onix-pected 07:52, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

The consensus states that Indigo League is the arc of this episode. The final one before they focus on the Orange Islands arc. Masatoshitalk 07:54, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

The Promise

Ok I'm gonna ask this here just to clear it up once and for all. In the original, did Ash promise to come back to Pidgeot or not??RBK (talk) 03:56, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
