There is another page about this but this one is better. (MathijsP 12:00, 6 June 2008 (UTC))

The other page on this is Gen III only. And isn't even named right. An appeal is the general round, not the combo thing. TTEchidna 01:21, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Since there's a combo page for Contests, couldn't there also be a page for "Battle Combos" (like Belly Drum>Rest>Chesto Berry)? Diachronos 10:36, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Colors

Wouldn't this look brilliant with colors for the moves' elemental types and contest types? It would be so visually pleasing and so much easier to scan. I can't do it for lack of time and lack of experience with wikicode. I will give a virtual hug to whomever undertakes it, though. :) Jazzmoth 05:01, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it would look great. I tried it with a movelist and it didn't look so great. How would one go about doing this? -MasterKenobi 23:52, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to figure this out and pursue it.--FromCrimsonToWool 07:29, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

More later...

Sleep soon. Plans, though.--FromCrimsonToWool 07:27, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

"Some amount"?

What does it mean when it says that, instead of doubling the base appeal points, Super Contest combinations "add some amount" to the second move's appeal? Is it random? I've yet to play Gen IV, so I can't confirm... yet. - poikins 01:29, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Probably the same thing that SHOULD be in the second for Contest Spectaulars, which is that it only adds around 3 appeal points. I only tested this with one combination, but i most assuredly did NOT get 16 points when I used Mean Look > Explosion, even though that's what the page implied. It looks like in Gen VI it always adds 3 points, but i can't say for Gen IV, because I also didn't care about the contests in that. NeckbeardedDragon (talk) 05:06, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Article Restructuring

It is my opinion that the main article should show the most current set of contest rules at the top of the page rather than the bottom, for ease of use. A more senior wiki member will need to make that call though. Just throwing the idea out there. LynnCreed (talk) 20:53, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

If we were talking about the intro, or just some block of text without explicit sectioning, I could totally sympathize with that view. However, I feel that the order of sections should definitely be kept chronological (earlier to later). To do it any other way just flies in the face of reason/standards, IMO. Tiddlywinks (talk) 21:05, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Pretty much what Tiddlywinks said. It's pretty standard on Bulbapedia to have content in the articles in chronological order within their sections. Re-ordering the info may end up causing additional confusion for readers trying to find the Gen III data. I feel that the table of contents that's automatically built into the page is sufficient enough to ease navigation. --Pokemaster97 22:19, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

Possible Mistake

Hello. I think there may be a mistake in the Beauty Combo Hail + Icy Wind, Gen III. I have Emerald version, and gave these 2 moves to Milotic. However, using those two in that order won't make a combo, even Icy Wind isn't marked in Red after i use Hail. Could anyone make sure if this is just a bug in my game, or if we need to remove that combo from the page? Imadmagician (talk) 15:03, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Super Contest combos

Do they actually exist? Most of the first moves are simply ones that double score regardless of what you follow with. Eridanus (talk) 16:54, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Unofficial name

While the concept is unnamed in the games, it's worth noting that in Pokémon Emerald: Prima's Official Strategy Guide they are consistently referred to as "Combos" (with a capital C). --SnorlaxMonster 11:48, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Cleanup/inaccurate data

I believe the list is inaccurate. I was checking Endure, and based on the game data (Emerald, Ruby, not sure if there are differences), it starts more combos than this page currently displays. Since this is the very first move I checked, it's likely that other combos are missing as well. (Worth noting that move pages may be inaccurate as well, since I believe they're largely based on this page.) Also, I believe these tables on here could use some templates.

Thought I'd just post it, maybe somebody feels like having a look? Nescientist (talk) 15:39, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Changelog ORAS

Another batch of changes as I update ORAS combos, again based on my own work.

I suspect most of these were planned to be combinations during development, and the ORAS guide that the page was based on used this development list, but in the final Gen VI release there are no Pokémon that can learn these combinations, so they were removed from the code. The only way to discover the removal in-game would be with a Smeargle, and I assume nobody ever bothered.

I point to Lock-On / Mind Reader / Miracle Eye as supporting evidence; in the guide they have the same finishing moves of Fissure / Guillotine / Horn Drill / Sheer Cold, but the only one out of the set that is actually learnable is Mind Reader + Sheer Cold, by Articuno, so the others were all purged from the code.

Moves in bold have been removed completely as combination starters.

Suggested move

I propose that this page be moved to "Appeal combo". This term is actually used in Generation III when a successful combo is performed, displaying the message "The appeal combo went over well". Think it's better to use a term that originates from the games over a fanterm. If there's a better, later example of another term being used, however, I think we should use that one for the page instead. Meeper12346 (talk) 03:03, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Do we know if there's been another use of this term, or possible another, since Generation III? MaverickNate 05:52, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
I can't find any guidebooks or random NPC dialogue on the matter, but Generation IV lacks any term altogether due to the lack of combos in Generation IV contests, and ORAS uses a rather generic term when a combo is performed: "The combo went over well with the audience!" Meeper12346 (talk) 15:05, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
To bump this, as it turns out the term "appeal combo" is actually used in OR/AS when a Pokémon draws the attention away from a Pokémon who misses the opportunity to perform a combo: "The audience, who had been looking forward to seeing an appeal combo, had their attention drawn away!". Looking at Poké Corpus, this line was absent from Generation III, making the phrasing here feel very deliberate.

In other languages (taken from ORAS):

  • Japanese: アピールの 組み合わせに 期待していた 観客が 目を そらしちゃった!
  • French: Mais le public auquel il destinait cette combinaison de Démonstrations regardait ailleurs !
  • Italian: Il pubblico si aspettava una combinazione diversa e sta guardando altrove!
  • German: Die Zuschauer hatten eine furiose Attacken-Kombination erwartet. Jetzt schauen sie woanders hin...
  • SP-EU: El público que esperaba una exhibición combinada estaba mirando a otra parte.
  • Korean: 어필의 조합을 기대하고 있던 관객이 시선을 돌렸다! Meeper12346 (talk) 18:33, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
