Unlike the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]], which takes certain aspects of the anime and retells the stories in new ways, Ash & Pikachu simply takes stills and pictures directly from the anime itself, assembles them sequentially, and adds word-bubbled for dialogue and sound effects.  The plot and characters of each chapter is 100% identical to a corresponding anime episode.
This manga, while not having striking differences like [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]], does put a few twists on certain episodes of the anime by retelling it in a fun way. For example, the second chapter of the first volume combines the Pokemon Fortune Telling episode and Ash's match against [[Whitney]], but with a couple of changes.
 
An collection of it was released in North America, and six chapters were run in Nintendo Power magazine when [[Pokémon Red and Blue]] were first released.  Each issue also came with part of a strategy guide for the games.
