Calem's design is based on his appearance in {{g|X and Y}}. Espurr and Meowstic are Pokémon that Calem uses as the [[rival]] character in the [[Kalos]]-based [[core series]] games. Espurr and Meowstic's Pokédex entries come from Pokémon X.

Fennekin is one of the [[first partner Pokémon]] of Kalos in the core series games. As the rival character, Fennekin and its evolutions are Calem's signature Pokémon if the player chooses {{p|Chespin}} as their first partner Pokémon in the Kalos-based core series games. Fennekin's Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon X.

Greninja is the final [[evolution]] of {{p|Froakie}}, one of the first partner Pokémon of Kalos in the core series games. As the rival character, Greninja is Calem's signature Pokémon if the player chooses Fennekin as their first partner Pokémon in the Kalos-based core series games.
