At the Pokémon Center, Acerola surprises Hilbert and the player by calling out, "Fight or fright." Hilbert is startled, which causes Acerola to apologize to him. Hilbert tells the player that he and Acerola are about to leave to go trick-or-treating. Acerola explains that there's a rule on Pasio for Trainers who go trick-or-treating—they have to say "Fight or fright," and have a Pokémon battle. Whoever loses the battle must give the winner some of their candy. Suspecting the player to wonder about her costume, Acerola explains that she is wearing it to make the experience more fun for the children who go trick-or-treating on Pasio. She and Hilbert invite the player to join them, making a plan to meet up later.

Entering the town at night, the player sees many Trainers having battles. The player's Pikachu notices a Mimikyu nearby, which approaches it. Nearby, Acerola and Hilbert are relieved to see Mimikyu, explaining that it had just run off from them. Hilbert notes that Mimikyu disguise themselves as Pikachu to be accepted by people and Pokémon, then points out that Pikachu has been looking at Mimikyu since it came over. Acerola remembers that Pikachu had been staring at Mimikyu in the Pokémon Center earlier, and speculates that he wants to become friends with it. Acerola and Hilbert make a plan to win as much candy as possible while trick-or-treating so they can share it with Palossand and Oshawott, who are busy playing at the beach.

Across the town, Acerola, Hilbert, and the player face off against other Trainers, winning candy for themselves. While they celebrate their wins, a voice calls out to them. They turn to see Hilda, who challenges Hilbert to a battle. Hilbert asks Hilda if she knows what is happening at the town tonight, and she misunderstands, explaining that she's always around wherever there are Pokémon battles. When Acerola explains that there is a special rule, Hilda laughs and tells her that she already knows the rule that two Trainers have to battle when they make eye contact. Hilbert tries to explain that isn't what they were talking about, but Hilda has already sent out her Tepig for a battle. After the battle, an exhausted Hilbert finally alleviates the confusion, telling Hilda about the rule of "fight or fright." Hilda is embarrassed, then informs the group of some Trainers she had recently battled who had given her candy.

Following Hilda's directions, Hilbert, Acerola, and the player look for the Trainers at a forest. Acerola announces to the group that she recognizes the area, and that Ghost Pokémon like to visit it. A Gengar appears from behind a tree, and Acerola is delighted. A shuffling sound is then heard, and Hilbert becomes startled and ready to protect the others. A Drifblim can soon be seen, and Acerola invites it to play. Purple flames suddenly appear from behind a tree, then quickly disappear, scaring Hilbert even more. When Acerola tells the others that she sees something, Hilbert prepares his Mightyena to attack. A Chandelure descends from the sky, and Hilbert pauses, feeling as though he has seen the three Ghost Pokémon together before. A voice complains from the forest, which Acerola recognizes.

The group comes across Shauntal, who writes down a line about a knight protecting a princess with his "dark powers" and fangs. She tells the two that they have inspired her more than anything else has in weeks. Hilbert and Acerola are happy that their costumes have given so much joy to Shauntal. When the player begins to ask Shauntal a question, Agatha and Morty enter, wondering where she had gone. Shauntal explains to them that she was looking for Pokémon when she found Acerola and the others. She gushes about their costumes and the way they have influenced her writing. Acerola asks Shauntal, Agatha, and Morty if they are at the forest to win candy, but they explain that they are there for the Midnight Parade, where Ghost-type Trainers march through the town. Acerola eagerly asks to join them, and they tell her that if she and the others can defeat them, they will give them some candy and let them march in the parade.

After Acerola, Hilbert, and the player win the battle, Shauntal and the others compliment their skill. The group leaves together to begin the parade. All over town, Trainers are surprised and intrigued by the Ghost-type Pokémon of those marching through the Midnight Parade. Two young Trainers enthuse over Mimikyu and Mightyena, then ask to battle them. Hilbert and Acerola happily accept. As they begin their battle, Shauntal, Agatha, and Morty watch from nearby with smiles on their faces.
