Mt. Silver Cave (Japanese: シロガネやまどうくつ Mt. Shirogane Cave) is a large mountain and its accompanying cave system in Johto, located west of Victory Road and Indigo Plateau. Mt. Silver Cave can be reached from Mt. Silver at the foot of the mountain proper in Kanto, after receiving the sixteen Gym Badges of both Johto and Kanto. In Generation II, both areas are known collectively as Silver Cave (Japanese: シロガネやま Mt. Shirogane).

At the very summit of Mt. Silver Cave, the player may battle Red. If defeated, Red vanishes from Mt. Silver Cave, and returns every time the Elite Four is defeated again by the player. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Moltres can also be found here.

Geography
In the games, Mt. Silver Cave is off-limits to all but the most skilled of Trainers. After the player has received all sixteen badges of Johto and Kanto, Professor Oak will give the player permission to travel here.

At the foot of Mt. Silver Cave, i.e. located in Mt. Silver, there is a Pokémon Center just outside its entrance. Inside, however, the cave is dark, requiring Flash to see in the first room. Many high-level Pokémon reside in the cave, as well as rare Pokémon not found elsewhere in the Johto region, like Larvitar and Misdreavus.

The cave has only one entrance, unlike all other caves found in Gold, but goes deep into the mountain. In the cave's final room, the player will encounter Red, who will wordlessly challenge the player to what is the highest-leveled Trainer battle in the Pokémon series. If defeated, Red will vanish, and will only return for another battle after the player defeats the Elite Four again.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Mt. Silver Cave is much larger than before. Flash is no longer needed to light up the cave. The higher sections of the cave, where Red is located, require Rock Climb to be accessible. At times, the player must also venture onto the slopes on the mountain's sides in order to climb higher. In addition, a hail is present at the summit, which assumes the hail weather condition in battle; this weather becomes diamond dust on certain days, which disables the hail weather condition in battle.

Trivia
* Red's Pikachu, who can be fought here at level 88 in HeartGold and SoulSilver, is the highest-leveled Pokémon of any in-game Trainer not in a battle facility in the core series, tied with Cynthia's Garchomp in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
* In the original player's guide for Gold and Silver, there is mention of a "?" Pokémon that appears near the waterfalls in Mt. Silver at midnight or very early in the morning; however, this was a false rumor. The guide also claimed that the unknown Pokémon was supposed to represent Legendary Pokémon found in the Generation I games that did not appear in Gold and Silver (which were programmed in and tradable from Generation I anyway).
* Like Snowpoint City, Mt. Silver's summit features Easter egg on certain special days in HeartGold and SoulSilver, including the anniversary of the release of Gold and Silver in Japan.
** Mt. Silver is also the only location in HeartGold and SoulSilver where a naturally occurring hailstorm can be experienced.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, whenever the player is in or on the mountain, the location header pop-up is always "Mt. Silver Cave", even when the player is not inside the cave. This may possibly be a carryover from the original games, in which the in-game location header was "Silver Cave".
* Fresh Water is collected from Mt. Silver, according to the Japanese item description in Gold, and Stadium 2. This is also mentioned in the Korean item description in Pokémon Gold and Silver. However, this is not mentioned in the English item descriptions.

Origin
Mt. Silver is based on Mt. Fuji in the real-world Japan.
