While pedaling down 17, Red crashes as a result of a bouncing Tangela. It bounces toward a caravan of people who prevent Red from getting closer to their "Princess." As it turns out, the princess is Lady Erika, who apologizes to Red for the citizens' hostility, and the mischief of her Tangela. Upon her apology, Red challenges her to a Gym battle, which she accepts. However, she tells him that first he must prove his talent as a Trainer by capturing an Eevee. Unsure of what an Eevee is, Red decides to contact Professor Oak, but fails to reach him. Red does succeed in coming across Bill, who shows him a picture of Eevee, and helps Red by contacting all his researcher friends for advice.
While pedaling down 17, Red crashes as a result of a bouncing Tangela. It bounces toward a procession of people who prevent Red from getting closer to the Litter (vehicle) that Lady Erika is being carried in, as he tries to demand an apology. She recognizes that they were at fault, and demands her followers apologize. They all take a deep bow, and one of them tells Red he should bow as well, as he's receiving an apology from the Celadon City Gym Leader. Erika apologizes for the actions of her Tangela, Angela, as Red challenges her to a Gym battle in his excitement.

Meanwhile, at the Celadon Gym archery range, Erika is approached by one of her servants, asking her to rethink her plan of sending Red out to capture an Eevee. Suddenly, Erika sends out her Vileplume, having it launch a Petal Dance at the servant, at which the servant cringes, only to find that Erika was not targeting her, but a hidden Drowzee. Erika calmly informs her servant to be careful as she was followed, before thinking to herself that Eevee must be captured, as soon as possible.
Erika is surprised, and Red puts forth his question again. A few members of her entourage decide to punish Red for making such an insolent request, and proceed to beat him up. Erika requests that they stop, and accepts Red's offer, on the condition he proves his worth by capturing a Pokémon of her choosing. Red accepts with vigor, and Erika requests he get an Eevee.

At the Route 17 Pokémon Center, Red can't believe that Professor Oak is out, frustrated that he hasn't been able to find out anything about Eevee, not even what it looks like. With today as the deadline, he's struck with panic, wondering what he'll do, when he hears a familiar voice on the computer, looking up to see Bill.

Later, Bill has met up with Red, and shows him a picture of Eevee on his computer. Unfortunately this is the limit of Bill's help, as the only information he has is the single picture. He sends out the image to every researcher he knows, hoping at least one will be able to at least provide a location, but no one is able to help.

Meanwhile, at the Celadon Gym archery range, Erika is approached by one of her servants, asking her to rethink her plan of sending Red out to capture an Eevee, as it might jeopardize their entire project if Red discovers what they need Eevee for. Suddenly, Erika sends out her Vileplume, having it launch a Petal Dance at the servant, at which the servant winces, only to find that Erika was not targeting her, but a hidden Drowzee. Erika calmly informs her servant to be careful as she was followed, before thinking to herself that Eevee must be captured, as soon as possible.

The scene switches back to Red and Bill, who have returned to Celadon City, where an Eevee was reported to have been seen using Fire attacks. As Red prepares his Krabby for battle and Bill prepares his machine to detect Fire energy, an Eevee bounds in front of him. With Bill still looking for his to machine to detect Fire energy, Red sends out Krabby, ready to face the Normal type, but Eevee changes its shape and blasts Krabby with an Electric attack instead. Surprised, Red sends out his Diglett. Eevee changes shape again and defeats Diglett with a Water attack. Red calls upon Saur, but Eevee is one step ahead as it changes shape and launches a Fire attack.
