Chien-Pao (Pokémon): Difference between revisions

Chien-Pao may be based on {{wp|Nimravidae|nimravids}} such as {{wp|Dinictis}} and {{wp|Hoplophoneus}}, {{wp|saber-toothed predator}}s with elongated bodies closely related to {{wp|felid}}s. It also may be inspired by {{wp|snow leopard}}s and the prehistoric {{wp|Smilodon}}, one of the most well-known true saber-toothed cats, as well as {{wp|weasels}} and {{wp|linsangs}}. The pieces of a sword that it uses as fangs may have been inspired by bronze swords, particularly the ''{{wp|jian}}'' (double-edged straight sword); and they may make Chien-Pao a literal interpretation of a "saber-toothed cat".

The shape of its form likely alludes to the 虎符 ''hǔfú'' ({{wp|Fu (tally)|tiger tally}}), the proof of imperial authorization in ancient China for implementation of troop orders. It may be based on ''Qiongqi'', a tiger-like creature in Chinese mythology whose name has in the past been used to refer to the ''{{wp|kamaitachi}}'' in Japanese folklore, hence the similar stats and typing to {{p|Weavile}}.
