Unlike previous generations, the core series games of the seventh generation were released on two different Nintendo platforms, with the first two pairs of games released for the Nintendo 3DS and the Yellow remakes released for the Nintendo Switch. It is the last generation released on the 3DS and the first one on the Switch. It was not given an official name until after the release of the cast commentary for the ''[[Detective Pikachu (movie)|Detective Pikachu]]'' film where the Roman-numeral form was officially given by the subtitles.
