Link templates allow users to quickly comply with Bulbapedia's [[Bulbapedia:Manual of Style|style]] guidance around page naming.  Multiple categories of pages have suffixes for clarity; these include [[Bulbasaur_(Pokémon)|Pokémon like Bulbasaur]], [[type]]s, [[Egg Group]]s, and [[move]]s. This logic is also applied to Pokémon characters - for example, Ash owns a [[Ash's_Pikachu|Pikachu]], but there are other Pikachu in universe, and even [[Ash's_Pikachu_(M20)|other versions of Ash's Pikachu]].

Link templates help Bulbapedia avoid challenges when navigating between articles. Wikipedia sometimes encounters issues, such as distinguishing the element [[wp:mercury (element)|mercury]] followed by the element [[wp:thallium|thallium]], and the planet [[wp:Mercury (planet)|Mercury]] followed by the planet [[wp:Venus|Venus]], [[Ash's Pikachu]] followed by [[Ash's Caterpie]], with link templates, has no conflict at all with [[Pikachu (Pokémon)]] followed by [[Raichu (Pokémon)]].

Image templates are a subclass of link template.  They can be used to link to an image that is named in a similar manner to others. Images that are good candidates for image templates are utilized across a wide number of pages.  Examples of images that meet these criteria are type icons.
