Do we have any evidence to believe Magearna is based off of a karakuri puppet? While I would agree that it is likely based off of historical automatons, I would argue that Leonardo da Vinci's robot[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo%27s_robot] has more evidence as a source of inspiration. Leonardo da Vinci lived 500 years ago, just as Magearna's creator did, and could very easily be described as a "scientist of uncommon genius".
