Although Snivy ended up being defeated by a Flare Blitz/Fire Spin combination attack, Tepig managed to persist in the battle and evolve into a Pignite in the process. Using its new attack, Fire Pledge, as well as a powerful Flame Charge, he was able to defeat both of his opponents. Impressed by Pignite's new power, Shamus asked it to come back to him, explaining that it could not forget about him. Pignite simply responded by scorching his head with Flamethrower, before walking over to where Ash was and standing proudly beside him, having decided to stay with him.

Character
Shamus' personality somewhat resembles Paul's, as both only sought and desired strong Pokémon, and refused attempting to bond with them, and treat them with respect. However, Shamus differs himself from Paul, as while Paul was ruthless and somewhat brutal, Paul was a fair Trainer who respected those who'd give him a fair challenge, and even when faced off against Trainers who are unworthy of his time, Paul simply brushes them off, while Shamus attempts to intimidate others into giving him their Pokémon as "winnings" from a battle, seen as when Shamus was trying to force Kylan into giving him his Pokémon.
Shamus was also quite emotionally manipulative, as whereas Paul would openly express his disappointment and disgust at weak Pokémon, and subsequently release them without caring about hurting their feelings, Shamus would fake being concerned and express fake sympathy or sadness, and upon being out of said Pokémon's sight, would laugh at their reactions. His emotionally manipulative nature is further proven as after seeing Pignite's strength, despite having previously released it due to deeming it weak, Shamus attempts to convince Pignite to rejoin his team, albeit unsuccessfully. Shamus is also quite ruthless in battle, seen as when Shamus ordered his Heatmor to attack its partner, Emboar, after the latter was infatuated by Snivy's Attract to snap it out of its effects.
