-:::Given how little like an actual bear Snorlax resembles, but his obvious similarities to Totoro, not to mention how Munchlax greatly resembles the smaller creatures that followed Totoro, I would say that both of them are far more inspired by that film than any actual bears. Totoro himself was partially based on bears, but Hayao himself said that he wanted to avoid the creature being too ursine in design, so he mixed it with other animals. And naturally there's the fact that Snorlax's natural sleeping position is very akin to Totoro's debut in the film, laying on his back blocking a clearing in dense forest foliage, sleeping.
