In Sun and Moon, Anabel is revealed to have joined the International Police, and was assigned on the UB Task Force. After the player becomes Champion, Looker, Anabel's subordinate, invites the player to the motel on 8. Inside, Anabel asks to confirm if the player came in contact with UB-01 Symbiont, better known as Nihilego. Upon confirmation, Anabel discloses the mission of the UB Task Force: to destroy the Ultra Beasts, who, being drawn into an unfamiliar world against their wishes, are hostile and thus dangerous. However, out of compassion for the Ultra Beasts, she asks the player for their assistance to catch them instead. Upon agreeing, Anabel challenges them to a battle to gauge their strength.
Ten years prior the the events of Sun and Moon, Anabel was found unconscious on a Poni Island beach by Looker and Nanu, who had just completed a mission for the International Police. She had lost most of her memories, only able to tell them her name, that she came from Hoenn, that she protected a tower there, and that she was a powerful Trainer. After being placed in the care of the International Police, they detected incredible amounts of Ultra Wormhole energy coming from her, implying that she was a Faller who was lost in a wormhole for a significant time. Anabel has never been informed of this, however.

After being defeated, Anabel is satisfied, and briefs them on their mission, the first step being to rendezvous with Wicke and gather information about the Ultra Beasts at the Aether Foundation. As the player returns to the motel, Looker spots Nihilego, and the player is compelled to catch it to proceed with the next mission. After doing so, Anabel receives clearance from the International Police HQ to let the player keep all caught Ultra Beasts, as she believes they would be happier off with them and would simply become research subjects if sent to HQ. Subsequently, four more Ultra Beast sightings are observed, requiring the player to capture them while Anabel helps to keep the Beasts away from civilization. She insists on doing this job, while sending out the player to catch the Ultra Beasts and Looker to remain in the motel as backup.
Anabel eventually joined the International Police herself and quickly ascended the ranks, until she ended up as Looker's superior in the UB Task Force, a secret division of the International Police that deals with Ultra Beasts. After the player becomes Champion in Pokémon Sun and Moon, they will meet Anabel and Looker when they visit the 8 motel on Akala Island.

As the player goes through the missions, upon catching the Ultra Beasts and returning to the motel, Anabel shows signs of pain or weakness, but keeps insisting she is all right. At the end of the fourth mission, while she is out trying to make a reservation at a restaurant for herself, Looker, and the player, Looker and Nanu, a retired International Police officer himself, reveal the reason for Anabel's weakness: Ten years ago, right after the first Ultra Beast incursion known to the International Police, Anabel had been found washed up on the beach of Poni Island, having passed through an Ultra Wormhole and lost most of her memories, only recalling her name, that she came from Hoenn, that she "protected some tower", and that she was a powerful Trainer. As a result of her encounter with the Wormhole, she became irradiated with the wormhole's energy, causing the Ultra Beasts to be drawn to her. The International Police took interest in her because of this, and after she volunteered to join, the organization decided to use her as bait to draw out the Ultra Beasts, a term called Faller (Japanese: Fall), although she is seemingly unaware of this.
When the player meets Anabel and Looker, the pair recruit the player to the UB Task Force. Although one of the task force's duties is to either safeguard or destroy the Ultra Beasts, neither Anabel nor Looker wishes to harm them, so they need the help of the new Champion of Alola. Anabel will also battle the player to ensure that they are up to the job.

According to Looker and Nanu, this mirrors the aforementioned first incursion, when the two of them, plus a woman, were sent to destroy the Ultra Beast, but just as they were about to do so, Looker let down his guard on the Ultra Beast out of pity, resulting in it lashing out and killing their female partner. She was also apparently a Faller, having passed through an Ultra Wormhole, and it would be inevitable that she would be targeted by the Ultra Beasts. This, according to Looker, is the reason why, towards the fourth and fifth missions, he sends her on false leads in her job to protect the townspeople from the Ultra Beasts, as it would buy time for her to regain her strength and not get targeted by the Ultra Beasts, knowing it would be fatal for her. It is also apparently the reason why Anabel was promoted so quickly, becoming Looker's superior despite having been his junior when she first joined the International Police.
The group proceeds to track down and catch Ultra Beasts across all four of Alola's islands. After the player catches the first, Nihilego, Anabel arranges for the player to keep the Ultra Beasts, rather than delivering them to the International Police where they would end up as research subjects. During each mission, Anabel's job is to protect nearby populated areas with the assistance of her Pokémon. As the missions continue, however, Anabel starts to show signs of fatigue. Apparently, the Ultra Beasts are being drawn to her strongly as a Faller and becoming extremely aggressive toward her, which is only exacerbated when there are multiple of them that can assail her simultaneously. In the last mission, Looker finally misdirects her away from the action so that she can recover her strength.

Upon the capture of UB-05 Glutton, Guzzlord and the completion of the final mission, Anabel decides to take a break and enjoy the sights of Alola as a tourist. She can later be encountered again as a Trainer in the Battle Tree, primarily using Pokémon from her Emerald roster.
After all of the Ultra Beasts have been caught, the International Police HQ grants Anabel and Looker paid leave until they receive their next orders. Anabel plans to spend the time sightseeing around Alola.

Looker mentions that, despite having been used as a Faller by the International Police, Anabel chose to lead the UB missions herself, and suspects that it may because she relates to the Ultra Beasts' plight of being in an unfamiliar world against their wishes.
Anabel can later be encountered again as a Trainer in the Battle Tree, primarily using Pokémon from her Emerald roster.
