Misty leaving the main cast caused a great amount of controversy among the fanbase with many extremely upset with her leaving. This led to many of Misty's fans leaving the fandom and a lot of hate being directed towards May in her early years. Misty naturally comes up as a candidate whenever there is speculation on the main characters of a future saga, with opinions on whether she will ever return divided.
