Golduck first appeared in A Tale of Ninetales, when Golduck is accidentally traded to Red alongside his other Pokémon. During the three days that Red has them he attempts to get them to relax and open up to him, with little success. They later traded back, while keeping the caring attitude that Red installed in them.
Golduck first made his appearance in A Tale of Ninetales, where an accident caused Red and Blue to switch parties, with Golduck ending up with Red. During his stay on Red's team, he, along with the rest of Blue's party, experienced Red's positive style of training, as opposed to Blue's fiercer one. When the Pokémon were returned to their respective Trainers, Blue's Pokémon ended up friendlier to Blue as a result of this type of training.

Golduck later appeared during the battle against Team Rocket, where he used his psychic powers to locate the Mr. Mime who was responsible for setting up a barrier around Saffron City, preventing access to the city. Using this information, Red and Pika defeated the Pokémon, turning the barriers off.
In Peace of Mime, Golduck teams up with Pika in order to break into Saffron City. Pika uses his Substitute to get past the barrier and Golduck uses Confusion to pass the information back to their Trainers. Inside the city Pika runs into the one who created the barrier, a Mr. Mime. Despite Mr. Mime's evasive attempts, a coordinated Thunderbolt from Pika successfully faints the Barrier Pokémon, lifting the barrier.

In the Yellow, Golduck was mainly used to transport Blue across water. He was later used in battle against Agatha, and was able to defeat her Arbok. As seen in a flashback, he was used in a battle against the same Elite Four member two years prior, where he channeled Blue's thoughts to his Pokédex while he was trap in a Dream Eater and had to distract her Agatha. He also showcased the ability to make a barricade of water using his Hydro Pump attack, which was used earlier to capture a Lapras.
In a flashback shown in Growing Out of Gengar, Golduck was used in a battle against Agatha , where he channeled Blue's thoughts to his Pokédex to communicate with Evan  while he was trapped in a Dream Eater and had to distract her Agatha. In Weezing Winks Out, Golduck was once again used to fight against Agatha, using his Confusion attack to defeat her and her Arbok.

Golduck was used during Blue's battle with Red in order to learn the ultimate moves from Ultima. During the battle, he caused heavy damage to Gyara, but the use of Dig against Snor led to a quick defeat when he used Earthquake while Golduck was underground. Golduck was later used against Trainer Tower A.I., known as "R", but was knocked back and was unable to attack.
In Red and Blue Make Purple Opponents, Golduck is used alongside Blue in a double battle against Red and his Snor and Gyara. Gyara starts the battle off with his Ability Intimidate, and Blue responds by having Golduck use Iron Tail and Porygon2 use Tri Attack on Red's Pokémon. Red then has Gyara counter attack with Body Slam on Porygon2, while Snor attacks Golduck with Strength. Gyara next uses Hyper Beam on Golduck, and Golduck uses Dig to hide and avoid further damage. Red counters by having Snor use Earthquake, dealing damage to Porygon2, twice the damage to Golduck due to him being underground, which causes him to faint, and Gyara being unaffected due to him being part Flying-type.

After Giovanni was defeated and Carr sent the flying airship containing him, his son, his loyal subordinates and enemies crashing, Golduck and Blasty used Hydro Pump to try to keep the airship in place with Blue using Megahorn and Silver's Pokémon would join the fray. However, ultimately, it was Mew who saved it from crashing.
In Storming the Forretress, after Giovanni was defeated and Carr sent the flying airship containing him, his son, his loyal subordinates and enemies crashing, Golduck and Blasty used Hydro Pump to try to keep the airship in place with Blue using Megahorn. However, ultimately, it was Mew who saved it from crashing.

Personality and Characteristics
Like most of Blue's Pokémon Golduck is serious, calm, and focused. He is very loyal to his Trainer and gives everything he has in battle, though he is usually used as support in battle to help his team gain the advantage, and he rarely takes a huge offensive approach. He is often used by Blue for his psychic powers, which are utilized by the Pokédex.
