Tauros is an abbreviation of its Japanese name, Kentauros. Tauros could also be a corruption of ''Toro'' ({{wp|Spanish language|Spanish}} for ''bull'').

Kentauros derives from {{wp|Greek language|Greek}} Κένταυρος ''{{wp|centaur}}''. It could also be a corruption of ''{{wp|Centaurus}}'', a large south-sky constellation representing a centaur.
