From a few runs just of Area 1, I've come to the conclusion that any trainer on the level can be the Gate Trainer, and it is randomly determined upon entering (with a few exceptions, as Sergeo will always be the Gate Trainer on the player's ''first'' visit to Area 1). There is also a decent amount of information missing from this page, such as trainers and potential rewards (I got a Calcium from Area 1, which is not listed, and fought an unlisted trainer named Lass Minne, who opened the gate).
