The Darkness type was introduced in the {{TCG|Neo Genesis}} set, along with the {{TCG|Metal}} type, when the {{t|Dark}}- and {{type|Steel}}s were added upon {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}'s release. Prior to this, there were no Darkness type Pokémon.


Like the {{TCG|Metal}} type, the Darkness type has its own Special Energy, {{Special|Darkness Energy}}. This type of energy affects only Darkness type Pokémon and Pokémon with Dark in their names, and allowed an attack that did damage do 10 more damage. There was no basic Darkness Energy card until the {{TCG|Diamond & Pearl}} set when [[Darkness Energy (Basic)|one was finally released]].
