Known as "a quiet mountain retreat", {{ci|Blackthorn}}'s main attraction is the [[Blackthorn Gym]], the last of Johto's official Gyms.  Due to its isolation (the only way into town is through [[Ice Path]]), there isn't much else of interest here.

The [[Blackthorn Gym]] is devoted to the {{type|Dragon}}, so your recent acquisitions from [[Ice Path]] will do well here. You will also need to bring a Pokémon that knows {{m|Strength}} with you to form a bridge to the Gym Leader.
The [[Blackthorn Gym]] is devoted to {{type|Dragon}} Pokémon.  Dragons take less damage from {{t|Grass}}, {{t|Fire}}, {{t|Water}}, and {{t|Electric}} moves, and are only vulnerable to Dragon- and {{type|Ice}} attacks.  Almost any Pokémon that you caught in [[Ice Path]] will do well here. Reaching the Gym Leader requires dropping boulders from the floor above to form a path, so bring along a Pokémon that knows {{m|Strength}}.
 
Battle past Cooltrainer Paul, and take the stairs to the second floor.


North of the stairs, you'll see two boulders side-by-side.  Neither one of these will help you get to [[Clair|the Gym Leader]], so head south.  Beat Cooltrainer Fran, and you'll see two boulders in the southeast area.  Push the right one down to the south wall, and shove the left one ↑9, →2 to drop it down the hole.  Continue north, defeat Cooltrainer Cody, shove the next boulder to the east wall, and push the last south, dropping it down the nearest hole.  Take the eastern stairs down to the center of the Gym's main floor.
Take the stairs to the second floor and go south.  Walk past Cooltrainer Fran to find two boulders in the southeast corner; move the right one to the south wall, and the left one up to reach the break in the floor.  Go to the northeast corner and drop the last boulder through the hole.  Take the eastern stairs down to the center island and beat the last two Cooltrainers to reach [[Clair]].


Battle past Cooltrainers Mike and Lola, and you'll reach [[Clair]] at the back of the Gym.
Each of Clair's {{p|Dragonair}} can paralyze an opponent with {{m|Thunder Wave}}, while her {{p|Kingdra}} can do the same with {{m|DragonBreath}}.  Use status ailments to your advantage, and replenish your health often so you are not caught off-guard by Kingdra's {{m|Hyper Beam}}.

As soon as you leave the cave, {{prof|Elm}} calls you. He asks you to visit him at the Lab, and since you have to travel through {{to|New Bark}} anyway, it won't be a problem. Heal up your team, and head south to {{rt|45|Johto}}.


Climb the ladder down to the main cavern.  {{m|Surf}} to the southwest and use {{m|Whirlpool}} to calm the waters.  Continue east behind the shrine and step onto the second strip of land to find the {{DL|Type-enhancing item|Dragon Fang}}.  While you are here, pay a visit to the dragon shrine to meet the clan's elder.  He gives you a short test to determine your attitude towards Pokémon.  Avoid the obviously negative answers to pass the test, then leave and re-enter the cave with no more than five Pokémon.  The elder rewards you with a {{p|Dratini}}, a young dragon that is rarer than others of its species thanks to its special {{m|ExtremeSpeed}} move.

Turn right and surf south across the lake.  Grab the [[Revive]] on the southeast platform, and go west along the water's edge to find {{TM|13|Snore}}.  Surf north and go west along the platform.  Make a U-turn to reach the northwest corner; the man here will give you the {{DL|Type-enhancing item|BlackGlasses}}, an item that enhances {{type|Dark}} attacks.  Head south and jump the two ledges to reach the opening to the Violet side.
