Debut The School of Hard Knocks

The Pokémon Technical Institute (Japanese: ポケモンゼミナール Pokémon Seminar), also known as Pokémon Tech (Japanese: ポケモンゼミ Pokémon Semi), is an anime-exclusive Pokémon academy located in the Kanto region. It is found in between Cerulean City and Vermilion City. It was featured in The School of Hard Knocks. In an old Pokémon.com summary, it was called the Pokémon Seminar, or Pokémon Zem for short, which comes from the Japanese name.[1]

While lost in the forest, Ash and Pikachu found a group of Tech students quizzing Joe, who was also a student. Whenever he got a question wrong, or failed to answer, the speed of the treadmill he was on increased.

Joe explained to Ash and his friends all about the school. Misty took offense when Joe said that he is still better than someone with two Badges. Determined to prove the battle simulator wrong, Misty then challenged him to a battle, where her Starmie defeated Joe's Weepinbell, a Grass Pokémon which had an advantage against a Water-type.

Angry with how Giselle, the top student in the Beginner Class, was treating Joe, Misty stormed off to find her. When she did, they had a battle where Giselle used a Graveler to defeat Misty's Starmie without a problem.

Ash also battled Giselle with Pikachu. She was stunned when the Electric-type defeated her Ground-type Cubone. It was then that Giselle came to a realization: not everything about Pokémon battling can be learned in school. Joe, as a result of seeing what happened that day, decided to return to his home and begin his journey like Ash did.

Classes

The boarding school is an alternative, but expensive, option to Pokémon Trainers who are unwilling or unable to go on a journey to collect Gym Badges. Much of the learning is based on developing general knowledge through reading textbooks and examinations. It offers luxury facilities including a specialized Training Room with virtual battle opponents and an outdoor pool. The exclusive school has high standards of its students, enforcing a strict uniform policy and keeping failing students back for potentially years.

Potential students must take an entrance exam to be enrolled at Pokémon Tech. Notably, Jessie and James both flunked the entrance exam, earning the lowest scores out of anybody in the school's history.

Students complete the various classes on offer to graduate:

  • The Beginner Class has the qualifications of a Trainer with two Badges.
  • The Intermediate Class has the qualifications of a Trainer with four Badges.
  • The Advanced Class has the qualifications of a Trainer with six Badges.
  • Once a student graduates from Pokémon Tech, they earn a diploma and automatically qualify for Kanto's Pokémon League Conference.
