The phony Pokémon interpreters are four characters of the day who appeared in The Poké Spokesman. They served as the main antagonists of the episode.

Phony Pokémon interpreters
The leader of the Phony Pokémon interpreters

The fake interpreters were running a fake Pokémon interpreter scam in which they profited off of their fake services. The authorities caught on to their scheme, and Officer Jenny was preparing to arrest Simon, a practicing Pokémon interpreter who appeared to match the police report descriptions. However, the fake interpreters fired missiles at Simon, Ash, and his friends, blinding them and allowing them to kidnap Simon. They wanted him to join their group, believing he was a fraud like them. Despite their threats, Simon refused since he felt their actions were wrong, and he later escaped.

After Simon checked up on Ash's Pikachu to see if he was okay, the fake interpreters showed up again at the Pokémon Center with their Magnemite and Magneton. In an extortion attempt, the leader ordered his gang's Pokémon to absorb the Center's electricity. They ignored Nurse Joy's pleas, but Simon's ability to communicate with Pokémon led the Magnemite and Magneton to stop their attack. Infuriated, the leader decided to kick Magnemite in order to teach it a lesson. However, Pikachu energized the Magnemite and Magneton with an Electric attack, allowing the Magnet Pokémon to attack their Trainers. Afterwards, the fake interpreters were arrested by Officer Jenny.

Magnemite (×3)
The men owned three Magnemite, which they deliberately starved of electricity in the lead-up to their extortion attempt at the Pokémon Center. After Simon finished telling Ash and his friends the story about his past, the men ordered the Magnemite to steal the electricity of a local Pokémon Center.

After Simon talked to the Magnemite, they stopped their actions and floated back to the ground from exhaustion. The leader was infuriated and tried to kick one of the Magnemite, but Pikachu recharged them with his own electricity, allowing them to turn against the fake interpreters and shock them.

None of Magnemite's moves are known.

Simon managed to convince the Magneton to consider the Pokémon they were harming, and eventually, they heeded his message. Pikachu then recharged them with his own electricity, allowing them to turn against the fake interpreters and shock them.
