Ruby figures out the girl he met is a human while she attacks him in anger. The girl sends her Torchic to attack Nana, causing Ruby to scream in horror as Nana's hair is burnt. After being informed of the situation, Professor Birch tells Ruby to take one of the two Pokémon in his bag for protection.
At Birch's suggestion, Ruby chooses the Water-type Pokémon, Mudkip. at first, he muses over what Contest category to use it in but decides to go for the Tough category. The girl continues attacking, even easily beating Mudkip in the process, and demands to know why he attacked her.
Birch overhears her voice and reveals to Ruby that the girl is actually his daughter, Sapphire. Now knowing the situation, Ruby tries to explain to Sapphire, but they are attacked by a wild Seviper. Sapphire attacks the Seviper and asks Ruby to help her, only to have him refuse her request at the idea of his Pokémon getting dirty. Sapphire defeats the Seviper, and they get into an argument over which is better: Pokémon battling or Pokémon Contests. Sapphire challenges Ruby to see who can complete their goal in 80 days, which Ruby accepts.
Suddenly Sapphire faints, due to getting injured when she protected Ruby from the Mightyena that attacked him before. After giving Sapphire some first aid, the Seviper awakens and attacks Ruby again. Ruby reveals that even though he focuses on beauty, he does have the ability to fight, and quickly defeats the Seviper and runs off, much to the surprise of Mudkip.
The counter of the bet starts at eighty days.
