The Ice Path (Japanese: こおりのぬけみち Ice Path) is a four-floored cave located in the Johto region that connects Route 44 with Blackthorn City.

The Ice Path has numerous ice puzzles, which vary in size and difficulty, such as a Strength puzzle involving pushing boulders into holes in order to progress. It is the only place in Johto where wild Swinub, Jynx, and Delibird can be caught.

Differences between generations

In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the Ice Path looked like an average cave. It was redesigned in Pokémon Crystal, having received a completely new and unique tile set that better depicts it as an icy cave as well as changes in the features and puzzles. Its design in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver is thus modeled after the Pokémon Crystal design.

In the Generation II games, collecting HM07 (Waterfall) is optional. In the Generation IV games, an NPC found nearby will claim that the HM is his and insist that the player take it, and he will not allow the player to proceed until they have collected the item.

In the anime

The Ice Cave in the anime

The Ice Path has not appeared by name in the anime. The Ice Cave, which serves the same role as the Ice Path, appeared in the banned episode EP250. The Ice Cave has a Pokémon Center inside, where the local Nurse Joy is aided by a Jynx rather than a Chansey. Team Rocket attempted to steal Nurse Joy's Ice-type Pokémon by heating up the cave, but their plans were thwarted.

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

The Ice Path made a brief cameo appearance in All About Arceus III as one of the locations Silver and his Weavile ventured to in their search of the Plates scattered around Johto.
