Appendix:HeartGold and SoulSilver walkthrough/Section 26

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 21

Route 21

A single patch of tall grass stands on the shoreline, but after that the land gives way to the ocean. To the south lie the ruins of Cinnabar Island.

The remains of Cinnabar Island

At some point during the last few years, the volcanic Cinnabar Island erupted. The Pokémon Center has been rebuilt, but the rest of the town remains either buried in rubble or swept into the sea. It is here that you meet Blue, contemplating the power of nature. The former Champion and current Gym Leader refuses to return to his post at the Viridian Gym. In order to persuade him, you must first collect the seven other Kanto Gym Badges. To earn the seventh, you need to track down the Gym Leader of the displaced Cinnabar Gym. With the building destroyed, Blaine was forced to relocate to a cave in the Seafoam Islands to the east.

Route 20

Route 20 is a stretch of ocean that surrounds the Seafoam Islands. After the Cinnabar eruption, Blaine was forced to relocate to a small cave in the upper part of the eastern island.

Blaine's quiz machines were destroyed, so there are no puzzles to solve. However, none of his six Gym Trainers will approach when you step into their line of sight. Each one is stationed at a choke-point and will not move until they are defeated. To reach the central area, it is necessary to approach from the western side, as Super Nerd Merle is the only one of the three nearest the Gym Leader that does not block the path upon defeat.

The Gym Leader is a Fire-type specialist, so you may want to bring a few Burn Heals. All three of his Pokémon are susceptible to Water- and Ground-type moves, but his Magcargo is especially vulnerable. Though his Pokémon are at respectable levels, they still should not pose much of a threat at this point. Despite this, Water Pokémon should still be careful of Magmar's ThunderPunch. Each of his Pokémon carries a White Herb, which prevents Overheat's Special Attack drop for a single turn.

For defeating him, Blaine awards you the Volcano Badge. In addition, he hands out TM50 (Overheat) as a prize.

Seafoam Islands

The Seafoam Islands are a pair of islands situated in the center of Route 20. The icy caves beneath these islands are full of twists and turns, and a legendary Pokémon makes its home on the lowest floor.

B1F

When you first descend into the icy caves, you begin in the southeastern part of B1F. Move the boulders aside and collect the Grip Claw in the dead-end path to the north. Walk up onto the nearest platform to reach an Ice Heal and climb down the northernmost ladder.

B2F

Walk down the stairway and slide across the ice patch. Inspect the two frozen stalagmites to the north to find a hidden Pearl. Turn right and battle past Skier Cady, Boarder Shaun, and Boarder Bryce to reach the northeast ladder.

B3F

Head southwest and pick up the Max Revive lying hidden between two stalagmites. Take the ladder down to B4F.

B4F

Go north to find TM13 (Ice Beam), and climb back up the ladder.

B3F

Head northwest, and move the boulder two paces northward. Circle around to the east side of the ice patch. Slide westward to the boulder, then north to reach another ladder.

B4F

Collect the Ultra Ball and climb back upstairs.

B3F

Cross the ice and climb the eastern ladder.

B2F

Pass by Boarder Bryce again, jump the ledge to the south, and climb the ladder.

B1F

Go west and climb down the nearest ladder on the lower level.

B2F

Pick up the Water Stone, jump the ledge, and take the ladder back to B1F.

B1F

Head north onto the upper level and climb down the ladder.

B2F

Circle around past the three Trainers and climb down the northeast ladder.

B3F

Go southwest to find three blocks sitting on an ice patch. Clear two of the three blocks out of the way by bumping into them from the north or south, sending them skidding away. Approach the third block from the east, which creates a stopping point that will allow you to continue westward. Another ice patch lies a short distance to the northwest. Bump the northeast block from the south, push the northwest block from the west, then slide clockwise from the southern edge of the ice to reach the Big Pearl. Climb down the ladder to the southwest.

B4F

Navigate the central part of the floor to reach the islet in the center, and climb the ladder.

B3F

Climb up the next ladder to B2F.

B2F

Cross the bridge and climb down the ladder in the southeast.

B3F

Take the next ladder down to the bottom floor.

B4F

Step into the water and surf westward. The nearest islet is the roost of Articuno, the first of Kanto's three legendary birds. Begin the battle with Fire-, Electric-, and Steel-type moves to weaken its health quickly, then follow up with Grass and Bug moves to wear it down further. If you fail to catch it, defeat the Pokémon League once more to cause it to reappear.

Afterwards, check the spot where it stood to find a hidden Zinc. Surf westward and climb the northwest ladder.

B3F

Walk a few paces southward and check the stalagmite to the east for a hidden Rare Candy. Head south then east to reach a Revive, then climb the southwest ladder.

B2F

Climb up the next ladder to B1F.

B1F

Head north and move the boulder aside to reach the northwest stairway, which leads to the islands' western exit.

Route 20 (east)

After exploring the icy depths of the Seafoam Islands, you re-emerge on Route 20. Continue eastward to reach the waters of Route 19.

Route 19

Route 19

In the time it took to return to the beach near Fuchsia City, the debris from the Cinnabar eruption has been cleared away. Fight the Swimmers here for some quick cash, then fly back to Viridian to battle for the final Badge.
