I was always under the impression that the further away from the 'nearest' Pokémon in the party the slower the Egg hatched, so for example if my party consisted of 'PPPPPE', where P is Pokémon and E is Egg, the Egg in position six would hatch faster than if my party was 'PEEEEE'.
