:Steelix's Japanese name is ハガネール, trademarked Haganeil. ネール is very clearly the last three kana of Steelix's name, which correspond to neil. Hence, the spelling. It seems crystal clear to me. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 05:39, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

:::Well, yeah, except that "Haganeil" is apparently spelt that way because it is a portmanteau of hagane and nail; "ネール" is not a portmanteau of anything, as it's just the English word nail. Bulbapedia:Romanization prescribes using trademarked names where possible, and using Hepburn as a secondary option. Transcribing it into standard English spelling as Nail seems like another sensible option in this case, but just because another related name is trademarked with a particular spelling it doesn't necessarily make our original adaptation of that trademarked spelling for this name.

:::It is a bit of a grey area, I admit, but if Bulbapedia is going to use an original spelling of an obscure character name based on the spelling of a Pokemon species name, surely that should be discussed as one of a number of options, no?

:::It's not really needed here, I've removed it. It remains on In-game trade, however. I think "Neil" is a little more appropriate, since anyone playing the Japanese games (and able to understand them) will basically see a Haganeil nicknamed Neil. In the meantime, "nail" is mentioned in Steelix's name origin. Tiddlywinks (talk) 09:38, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
