Tragic Downfall
Though I wasn't bold enough to put it in the article, I think this is the first time May suffers from a "tragic downfall". Occasionally, to justify a main character's loss, the protagonist becomes extremely overconfident or otherwise filled with hubris, and I think we clearly saw that from May this episode (a sort of bastardized classical tragedy, the idea that if the main character suffers, he or she had better deserve it). It's happened before, to Ash in particular on several occasions. Well, you know the old saying: Pride cometh before the fall...
