Storm Drain (Japanese: よびみず Pump Priming) is an Ability introduced in Generation IV. Seven Pokémon have this Ability, four of which are Water-type and the remaining being Grass-type.

Effect

In battle

Generation IV

Storm Drain forces all single-target Water-type attacks to strike the Pokémon with this Ability in Double Battles, including those used by allies. In a Single Battle, it will cause the Pokémon with this Ability to always be hit by Water-type moves. Storm Drain cannot redirect Surf, as it targets multiple Pokémon. Storm Drain cannot redirect Water-type Hidden Power or Judgment.

If another Pokémon becomes the center of attention, Water-type moves will be directed to it instead of the Pokémon with Storm Drain.

Generation V

Along with its previous effects, Storm Drain also gives the Pokémon immunity to all Water-type attacks and raises the Pokémon's Special Attack by one stage whenever they are hit by one.

Storm Drain draws Soak in a Double Battle.

Storm Drain can redirect a Water-type Hidden Power.

Outside of battle

Storm Drain has no effect outside of battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

In Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, a Pokémon with Storm Drain draws in all enemy Water-type attacks on the floor, and their damage/effect is completely neutralized. Dungeon enemies with Storm Drain can negate the Storm Drain of the player's team member(s).

Trivia

  • Unlike with Lightningrod, no types are immune to Water, therefore, in Generation IV, the four Pokémon with this Ability took half or full damage from Water attacks, rendering it less useful in general than a Ground-type with Lightningrod.
