Storm Drain (Japanese: よびみず Pump Priming) is an Ability introduced in Generation IV.

Effect

In battle

Storm Drain forces all single-target Water-type moves used by other Pokémon (including allies) to target the Pokémon with this Ability, if possible.

Water-type moves will never miss the Pokémon with this Ability, unless it is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move (such as Dive or Fly), although Surf will never miss a Pokémon in the semi-invulnerable turn of Dive. Storm Drain can only redirect Dive on the turn Dive deals damage.

If another Pokémon becomes the center of attention, Water-type moves will be directed to it instead of the Pokémon with Storm Drain.

If a Pokémon with Storm Drain is targeted by a Water-type move while holding an Absorb Bulb or Luminous Moss, Storm Drain absorbs the move so the item's effect is not triggered.

Moves (e.g. G-Max Hydrosnipe) and Abilities that ignore Abilities ignore Storm Drain and hit the intended target. In Triple Battles, Storm Drain cannot redirect Water-type moves if the Pokémon is out of range.

Generation IV

Storm Drain cannot redirect Water-type Judgment or Natural Gift.

Generation V onward

Along with its previous effects, Storm Drain also gives the Pokémon immunity to all Water-type moves, and it raises the Pokémon's Special Attack by one stage whenever it is hit by one. Water-type multi-strike moves (such as Water Shuriken or Water-type moves affected by Parental Bond) will only activate this effect once. This effect will not activate if the Pokémon is protected from the Water-type move.

Storm Drain can now redirect Water-type Judgment and Natural Gift.

The Abilities Propeller Tail and Stalwart and the move Snipe Shot bypass the targeting effect of Storm Drain, but not the Water-type immunity.

Outside of battle

Generation VIII

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, if a Pokémon with Storm Drain is in the first place in the party (even if fainted), there is a 51% chance the game will force an encounter with a Water-type Pokémon, if one is possible. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the chance is 50%.

Generation IX

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, this Ability has no effect outside of battle, with its former field function effectively being replaced by Meal Powers.
