Spin Attack (Battrio)

Spin Attack (Japanese: スピンアタック) is a mechanic featured in the Pokémon Battrio arcade game, introduced in the Battrio V upgrade. Spin Attacks are an optional method of dealing additional damage to opponents during gameplay, and can be used by teams that share the same spin color on their pucks. Spin colors can either be red, green, or blue, and are only found on Single or Double rarity pucks. Teams eligible to use Spin Attacks are identified by a colored puck symbol on their Team Gauge. Accumulating enough Berries between battle phases to the point on the Team gauge will initiate a Spin Attack for that player.

Beginning a Spin Attack.

While executing a Spin Attack, a player must move two pucks to the top of the grid out of the way (the 'Support Zone') and then begin moving their selected Pokémon in a circular motion on the grid. This affects the position of the player's puck symbol on the spin gauge. Speed and rhythm are important, as the opponent will also be spinning one of their pucks to counter the player. A Spin Attack will always deal damage, but how much depends on where the player manages to get their symbol on the spin gauge in the allotted time. From the Burning Wings - Cold Fangs expansion onwards, summoned Pokémon may also inflict an added status condition, which share similarities with those in the core games.

  • Finishing in the yellow zone will deal normal damage to the opponent and may inflict a status condition on the target Pokémon.
  • Finishing in the orange 'Power Up' zone will deal more damage and may inflict a status condition to an additional Pokémon on the opponent's team.
  • Finishing in the blue 'Power Down' zone will deal less damage.
  • Finishing in the purple 'Power Down' zone will deal considerably less damage and eliminate the chance of inflicting a status condition on the target Pokémon.

Pokémon affected by status conditions will have a symbol above their Berry Gauge and a colored aura on the field. As of the latest expansion, there are six status conditions.

Spin attackers

Pokémon that can be summoned for a Spin Attack are grouped in sets, and each set depends on the pucks in the player's team. The available set is displayed before the battle begins, though which Pokémon from that set is summoned for the eventual Spin Attack is random. Sets generally contain a mixture of powerful and weak Pokémon, as indicated by the star value in the tables below, though some sets focus exclusively on inflicting status conditions.

Some promotional pucks may summon a specified Pokémon, as indicated on the puck, or from an exclusive set not detailed above that focuses on a particular type or inflicting a certain status condition.

Special scan

From the Fierce Gale - Thundering Thunderclaps expansion onwards, grouping pucks by their base and spin color (e.g. a team that consists of pucks with black bases and green spin colors) also allows players to scan in a fourth puck. This is called the 'special scan'. During battle, an icon depicting the scanned Pokémon will be present in the bottom corner of the screen. When one of the main party Pokémon has filled its Berry Gauge, the player will be prompted to press the confirm button. Doing so in a timely manner will summon the fourth Pokémon for an attack after the party Pokémon has attacked. Some Pokémon also have a special feature, which will activate during battle. Unlike Pokémon conventionally used in battles, those summoned via the special scan are not affected by Exhaustion, and will therefore not receive reduced stats if summoned again.
