Janovy's color scheme is similar to its species' possible namesake, ''{{wp|Opheodrys aestivus}}'', the North American grass snake, while ''{{wp|Oxybelis fulgidus}}'', the Central and South American vine snake, may be the basis for its general serpentine features. Its head and general body shape, as well as the yellow crest on its body and shoulders, may be based on the {{wp|birds of paradise flowers}} or {{wp|Heliconia|false birds of paradise}}. Its evolutionary line was confirmed by [[Ken Sugimori]] to have been based on French royalty. Janovy's physical appearance may have been based on the {{wp|acanthus (ornament)|acanthus leaf}} motifs used specially during the 14th and 18th centuries. {{p|Snivy}} and its evolutionary line may also be based on the {{wp|Serpent (Bible)|Serpent}} in the {{wp|Garden of Eden|Garden of Eden story}} from the {{wp|Old Testament}}. {{wp|God in Christianity|God}} had cursed the serpent to crawl on its belly and lose its legs for leading mankind to sin. Janovy's {{a|Antagonist|hidden ability}} also suggests this.
