Characteristics
Defensively, the Rock-type is outstanding. However, they are weak to five types, two of which are Special-based (until Generation IV), an area Rock-types are not particularly strong in. On the other hand, they are also strong against four types. Compounding this large number of weaknesses is the fact that many Rock types are dual-types with Ground or Water, giving them a large vulnerability to Template:Type2 moves. Dual-typed with Steel also gives the Rock type a large disadvantage with Ground, although due to their high defense they will still be highly resistant to most Ground attacks.
Offensively, the Rock-type isn't as reliable. They hit the Flying-type for super-effective damage, which is good because the Flying-type is common in the games. The Rock-type also has powerful moves like Stone Edge. But overall, the Rock-type is not a very good choice for offense, since the types it is strong against are sometimes paired with the types it is not very effective against, e.g. Infernape, Heracross and Skarmory, all of which are commonly used in the metagame.

Trivia
- If there were a hypothetical Pokémon of all 17 types, it would only be weak to Rock-type moves. However it's possible to create more weaknesses by using moves like Foresight to remove immunities.
- There were no pure Rock-type Pokémon until Generation II.
- No physical Rock-type move is 100% accurate.
- In the first season of the Pokémon anime and during much of Generation I, the Rock-type was often wrongly assumed to be unaffected by Template:Type2 attacks. This was likely due to the fact that at the time, the only Rock-types that were not part Ground were the Fossil Pokémon.
- The Rock-type is tied with the Template:Type2 for the largest number of weaknesses when unpaired, with five: Grass, Water, Ground, Fighting, and Steel.
