Rainbow Feather

The Rainbow Feather (Japanese: 虹色の羽根 Rainbow Feather), called Rainbow Wing prior to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, is a Key Item introduced in Generation II. It is a legendary artifact that is associated with Ho-Oh.

In the core series games
In Pokémon Gold and Pokémon HeartGold, after defeating Team Rocket and liberating the Goldenrod Radio Tower, the Radio Director gives the player a Rainbow Wing. In Pokémon HeartGold only, they will also need a Clear Bell, received from the Kimono Girls after defeating them.
In Pokémon Silver and Pokémon SoulSilver, an old man in Pewter City near the Route 3 entrance will give the player a Rainbow Wing.
In Pokémon Crystal, after catching all Legendary beasts and entering the Hall of Fame, the Wise Trio Sages at Tin Tower will give the player a Rainbow Wing. The player must have the beasts present on their party or Pokémon Storage System with the same Original Trainer and Trainer ID number as them in order to obtain the Rainbow Wing.
Effect
With the Rainbow Wing, the player can encounter Ho-Oh at the top of Bell Tower (known as Tin Tower in Generation II).

Main series
A Rainbow Wing played a major role in I Choose You!. Set in a timeline different from the main series, it was found by Ash when he first saw Ho-Oh. During the movie, Ash learned that Ho-Oh had given him the Rainbow Wing as a recognition of having chosen him to be the "Rainbow Hero", and decided to travel to Mount Tensei to meet and battle Ho-Oh.
Eventually, Cross, wanting to meet Ho-Oh himself, stole the Rainbow Wing from Ash and tried to use it to summon Ho-Oh. However, it instead became corrupted by his selfish desires, causing Marshadow to send a group of wild Pokémon on a rampage. When Ash was killed by the rampaging Pokémon, the Rainbow Wing crumbled away. However, once Ash was revived, the Rainbow Wing was also reformed, allowing Ash to use it to summon and battle Ho-Oh.
Another Rainbow Wing appeared in Finding a Legend!, under the ownership of an old man named Jaye. He used to search for Ho-Oh for many years after having caught a glimpse of it in the past. However, after years of failing to find it, he became convinced Ho-Oh didn't actually exist and threw his Rainbow Wing away. However, his grandson Chad took and preserved it, wanting to restore his grandfather's belief in Ho-Oh's existence. Ash and Goh later visited Ecruteak City and heard Jaye's story from Chad. Afterwards, they decided to accompany Jaye and Chad as they climbed the Bell Tower in the hopes of summoning Ho-Oh with the Rainbow Wing. At the top of the tower, the Rainbow Wing ended up glowing in response to a rainbow appearing in the sky. Just when the group was about to leave, Jaye saw Ho-Oh flying in the distance.
Pokémon Generations
A Rainbow Wing made a brief appearance at the end of The Reawakening, where it was seen falling to the ground behind Eusine at the Burned Tower after his brief encounter with Suicune.
In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
As seen in The Escape, Green stole a Rainbow Wing and a Silver Wing from the Masked Man when she and Silver escaped from him, later hiding both feathers in Yellow's straw hat.
Yellow arc
The Silver and Rainbow Wings were seen on Yellow's straw hat. However, they simply appeared to be regular feathers, and their true nature was not revealed until the next arc.
Gold, Silver & Crystal arc
The Rainbow Wing and Silver Wing were revealed to be on Yellow's hat. These artifacts were used to free Gold from the gap of time inside the Ilex Forest shrine where the Masked Man had trapped him in.
The Masked Man also used a Rainbow Wing and a Silver Wing directly collected from their respective Legendary Pokémon in order to create a GS Ball. Only a capture net created from these two feathers could contain Celebi and allow its holder to travel through time without suffering its negative side effects.

Trivia
- Rainbow Wing's name was changed to Rainbow Feather in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, despite the item being unobtainable and never mentioned in these games.
