Inhabitants

The island is currently uninhabited by humans, and home to many different species of wild Pokémon. Being completely isolated, it is an ideal environment to observe how wild Pokémon act naturally, with little human interference. At some point in its recent history, Pokémon Island was clearly inhabited by humans. Many man made structures and objects are still scattered across its landscape, including a decommissioned power plant.

At present, only authorized persons are allowed on the island, and Pokémon Trainers are strictly prohibited from stepping foot on its soil. This is likely due to both nature and Pokémon wildlife preservation efforts. Any attempt at catching the local Pokémon could potentially upset the island's natural balance. According to the Pokémon Snap novel, Professor Oak has specifically designated the island as a sanctuary for wild Pokémon.

Within Pokémon Island exists several different habitats, ideal for an assortment of diverse Pokémon. The island is notable for being home to several rare species of Pokémon, including the Legendary birds and Mew. In the absence of mankind, the island's Pokémon population has flourished and nature is slowly reclaiming the land.

In Pokémon Snap, Professor Oak hires Todd Snap to take photographs of all the Pokémon on the island. Todd does such using the ZERO-ONE, a camera, and several other gadgets.
