The pink Butterfree (Japanese: ピンクバタフリー pink Butterfree) is the first alternately colored Pokémon shown in the anime. Her unique coloring set her apart from the many other Butterfree (such as Ash's Butterfree) shown in the episode.

History

Original series

She first appeared in Bye Bye Butterfree, in which Ash's Butterfree fell in love with her. Though she initially rejected Butterfree's advances, the pink Butterfree changed her opinion when Ash's Butterfree fought to save her from Team Rocket. At the end of the episode, the two became mates, and Ash's Butterfree, with Ash's blessing, flew away with the pink Butterfree across the ocean.

The pink Butterfree next appeared (though only in a picture) in A Fan With a Plan. She also made her next actual appearance in Spurt!, the Japanese opening for a portion of Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

The pink Butterfree appeared in a flashback in A Trainer and Child Reunion!, alongside Ash's Butterfree.

Pokémon the Series: Black & White

The pink Butterfree appeared in a flashback in Butterfree and Me!, alongside Ash's Butterfree.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

The pink Butterfree appeared in a flashback in Alola, Kanto!, alongside Ash's Butterfree.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

The pink Butterfree appeared in a fantasy in Heroes Unite!, alongside Ash's Butterfree.

In This Could be the Start of Something Big!, the pink Butterfree, alongside her mate, reunited with Ash and Pikachu.

Personality and characteristics

The pink Butterfree is very decisive and somewhat aggressive in nature. When Ash's Butterfree showed off his moves, she deliberately ignored him, eventually going so far as to knock him out of the air. She only gained respect for Ash's Butterfree after he tried to rescue her and the other Butterfree from Team Rocket. Once she saw Ash's Butterfree in that new light, she chose to be his mate.

Apart from her pink head and body and the pink tint to her wings, the pink Butterfree shares her physical characteristics with the typically colored Butterfree of her generation: Her eyes, mouth, arms, legs, and edges of the wings all have the same coloration as other Butterfree. In I Choose You! and This Could be the Start of Something Big!, the pink Butterfree also has the black spots on her wings that are characteristic of female Butterfree.

I Choose You!

In the movie's alternate continuity, Ash and his Butterfree saved the pink Butterfree from a Fearow. As in the original series, the two Butterfree fell in love, and Ash allowed his Pokémon to cross the sea with its newfound mate.

In the games

A Shiny female Butterfree as seen in Pokémon HOME

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, a female NPC Ace Trainer near the top of the Lake of Rage makes a reference to a pink Butterfree after battling her. She comments, "Come to think of it, I've seen a pink Butterfree." This is likely a dual reference to Butterfree's Shiny form in the games, which does have pink coloring (but only on the wings and none on the body), due to the Trainer's pre-battle comment regarding the red Gyarados, the first known alternate-color Pokémon of the games.

The Pink Butterfree appeared in I Choose You!, where it was seen being chased by a wild Fearow. Ash sent out his Butterfree to drive away the Fearow with Gust.

Later, the Pink Butterfree was seen with a flock of Butterfree flying south. Seeing how the two Butterfree got along, Ash let his Butterfree choose whether to join the pink Butterfree and fly away, which it accepted. After Ash said a tearful goodbye to his Butterfree, it and the Pink Butterfree flew south.
