Physiology
Pawniard has a round red head resembling a helmet with a blade extending from the front. Its face is black with yellow eyes. Its torso is black underneath four steel spines, two on each side, connected by steel ribs. Its arms are red and end with knives rather than hands. These blades can also be shortened when not being used to attack. Its legs are red with two-toed feet.

Pawniard is skilled in fighting and stabs its foes with its bladed hands.
Behavior
Pawniard live in packs and are governed by Bisharp, who gives them orders. When a pack meets prey, Pawniard will allow their leader Bisharp to perform the finishing attack.

Pawniard and its evolution are carnivorous hunters and will hunt in packs.
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Pawniard and its evolution.
- The types it has are coincidentally the two types introduced in Generation II.
- Due to their typing, Pawniard and its evolution are also the only Pokémon that have double resistance to Ghost-type.
- Pawniard and Wailmer are the only Pokémon that can evolve that can have Pressure as their ability.
- Coincidentally, it is as a Hidden Ability in both cases.
- Pawniard and Bisharp are the only Pokémon that can have Defiant as a non-Hidden Ability.
Origin
It looks similar to a knight and may be based on Arthurian legends of black knights. It may also have gained origin from the Kaijin style of Japanese monster movies, involving a humanoid creature that acts as a villain. There is also a resemblance to the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series' suited heroes.
Name origin
Pawniard is possibly a combination of pawn, the most basic piece in chess and poignard or poniard, a lightweight dagger. It may also derive from palliard, meaning "beggar" or "thief".
Komatana is likely a combination of 細切れ komagire, small pieces, and 刀 katana, sword, or 小刀 kogatana, knife.
