Natu (Japanese: ネイティ Naty) is a dual-type Psychic/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Xatu starting at level 25.

Biology

Physiology

Natu is a tiny, mostly green bird Pokémon with a nearly spherical body, and with accentuations of red, yellow and black along with its main coloration. It possesses brightly colored, yellow-and-red wings with thick black stripes. The wings are small and not fully-grown, thus making it unable to fly. Natu has a red crest on the top of its head, and its three-toed feet and three tail feathers are also red. Natu also has almond-shaped eyes and a yellow beak.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Like many Template:Type2 Pokémon, it possesses psychic abilities. It is also quite skilled at climbing tree trunks and hopping.

Behavior

Due to its prophetic abilities, it is a very cautious Pokémon that is easily spooked. It has the quirky behavior of staring at something until the thing moves.

Habitat

Natu are believed to be native to South America, although they can be found near ruins in Johto and the Sevii Islands, and they have also been spotted in Sinnoh. They have also been imported to the Hoenn Safari Zone.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

It usually forages for food on the ground but may, on rare occasions, hop onto branches to peck at the tree's new shoots. It also picks food from cactus plants, avoiding the buds and spines.

Natu's debut appearance was in Doin' What Comes Natu-rally!.

Minor appearances

A Natu was also seen starring in an outer-space version of the movie Titanic in Lights, Camerupt, Action.

Three Natu, along with a Xatu, were used to signal the start of a Water Pokémon race in the movie Pokémon Heroes.

A colony of Natu appeared in A Staravia is Born!.

A Natu, along with its evolved form, appeared in Historical Mystery Tour!.

Pokémon Adventures

Crystal owns a Natu, whose Psychic attacks allow it to hold its own despite its size. Crystal also uses Natu to provide flight transport over short distances. Sometime between the GSC and Emerald arcs, it evolved into a Xatu, and with it came increased speed and flight stamina, though it isn't seen battling much.

In Volume 22, Will is seen to have a Natu during Silver's flashback of his escape from the Masked Man, probably a pre-evolution of the Xatu he used many volumes earlier.

Trivia

  • Natu had its species name changed within a generation (albeit only slightly). In Gold and Silver, its species was given as Littlebird, while Crystal added a space, changing it to Little Bird. Later games then changed its species name to Tiny Bird.
  • Natu is the smallest Psychic-type Pokemon.

Origin

Natu appears to be based on a parrot. It also resembles a quail.

Name origin

Natu may be derived from native and Atu, the first man of Samoan mythology. Natu is also Latin for birth. Its Japanese name appears to be a shortening of native.
