Metang's body is magnetized, and it uses magnetism to move, communicate, and control its attacks. It is said to be related to Magneton, but Metang's magnetism focuses on {{type2|Psychic}} moves instead of {{type2|Electric}} moves. Metang is capable of two rare {{type2|Steel}} moves, {{m|Bullet Punch}} and {{m|Meteor Mash}}. It can also use some Psychic-type moves such as {{m|Psychic}} and {{m|Zen Headbutt}}. Metang has a few {{t|Rock}}-type moves at its disposal, such as {{m|Rock Tomb}} and {{m|Rock Slide}}. A couple of anomalies in Metang's movepool include {{m|Grass Knot}} and {{m|Sludge Bomb}}. Metang can also learn {{m|Hyper Beam}}, despite being second in a 3-tiered evolution line.
