Magcargo (Japanese: マグカルゴ Magcargot) is a dual-type Fire/Rock Pokémon.

It evolves from Slugma starting at level 38.

Biology

Physiology

Magcargo are large fire Pokémon that seem to consist almost entirely out of magma, much like it's pre-evolution. However, it has gained a hard shell that is made out of hardened magma. This shell seems to have a circular-shape and has small holes in it that spurts out small flames. This shell is somewhat thin and can flake off easily.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Magcargo's body is over 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to its magma body, it is able to use many Template:Type2 moves. It can also learn Recover.

Behavior

Habitat

To keep itself from hardening, Magcargo prefers to stay near something very hot like a volcano.

In the anime

Flannery's Magcargo

Magcargo first appeared in Some Like it Hot. A Trainer named Egan was trying to capture an unusually large Magcargo.

The first time a normal-sized Magcargo appeared was in Love, Pokémon Style!. Also, Macey's Slugma evolved sometime after battling Ash.

Flannery has a Magcargo that evolved from one of her two Slugma in Poetry Commotion!.

A Magcargo appeared in DP114.

In the manga

Pokémon Special

Magcargo first appeared in Template:PSV, under the control of Keane. It was shown being able to attack even when asleep by using Sleep Talk.

Another Magcargo appeared under the ownership of Flannery in Template:PSV.

Magcargo was also seen as one of the Pokémon used by Team Magma.

Generation II
Gold The shell on its back is just skin that has cooled and hardened. It breaks easily with a slight touch.
Silver Its brittle shell occasionally spouts intense flames that circulate throughout its body.
Crystal Its body is as hot as lava and is always billowing. Flames will occasionally burst from its shell.
Stadium 2 The shell on its back is just skin that has cooled and hardened. It breaks easily with a slight touch.
Generation III
Ruby Magcargo's shell is actually its skin that hardened as a result of cooling. Its shell is very brittle and fragile - just touching it causes it to crumble apart. This Pokémon returns to its original size by dipping itself in magma.
Sapphire Magcargo's body temperature is approximately 18,000 degrees F. Water is vaporized on contact. If this Pokémon is caught in the rain, the raindrops instantly turn into steam, cloaking the area in a thick fog.
Emerald The shell on its back is made of hardened magma. Tens of thousands of years spent living in volcanic craters have turned Magcargo's bodies into magma.
FireRed Its brittle shell occasionally spouts intense flames that circulate throughout its body.
LeafGreen The shell on its back is just skin that has cooled and hardened. It breaks easily with a slight touch.
Generation IV
Diamond Its body temperature is roughly 18,000 degrees F. Flames spout from gaps in its hardened shell.

Trivia

  • Magcargo is the only pre-Generation IV Pokémon to be obtainable in every game since its debut (this includes side games, many Pokémon such as Pikachu appear in every main series games, but are missing from certain side games).
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Magcargo.
  • Magcargo's sprites in Gold and Silver were pink and blue, despite its official artwork. This was then corrected in Crystal when Magcargo's shiny was changed to pink, like its sprite in Gold and Silver.
  • Despite the fact Magcargo's shell crumbles easily, in the anime it retracts to its shell and protects it from damage.
  • Magcargo's body is over 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which should be hot enough to melt flesh. However, it has made contact with Pokémon many times in the anime and none of them felt any burning from its body. This trait is shared with Ponyta and Rapidash.

Origin

Magcargo is based on a snail with a body of lava.

Name origin

Magcargo's name is a combination of magma, intrusive molten rock, and escargot, the French word for snail. The word cargo can also be found, referring to the shell it carries.
