Levitate (Japanese: ふゆう Floating) is an Ability introduced in Generation III.

Effect

In battle

Levitate renders the Pokémon with this Ability immune to damaging Ground-type moves (except Thousand Arrows) and, since Generation VII, damage from Sky Drop. It also is unaffected by the effects of Arena Trap, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Sticky Web, Rototiller, and terrain. Additionally, a Poison-type Pokémon with Levitate cannot remove Toxic Spikes.

These immunities are lost during Gravity or if the Pokémon with Levitate is holding an Iron Ball, is under the effects of Ingrain, or has been hit by Smack Down or Thousand Arrows. This Ability can also be suppressed by Gastro Acid or ignored by Mold Breaker, Teravolt, or Turboblaze.

Many Pokémon with this Ability are eligible to enter Sky Battles; however, some Pokémon with this Ability—such as Gengar—are ineligible, due to them landing on the ground when entering the battle.

Outside of battle

Levitate has no effect outside of battle.

  • Despite the fact that its descriptions from Generation IV on state that Levitate gives immunity to all Ground-type moves, Pokémon with Levitate are affected by the status move Sand Attack.
  • Fan Rotom is the only Pokémon with this Ability to be naturally immune to Ground-type moves due to being Flying-type in Generation V and onward.
  • Bronzor and Bronzong are the only Pokémon that can have this Ability that also have a secondary Ability.
  • Despite having this Ability, Gengar, Vibrava, Eelektrik, and Eelektross (the latter three only in Generation V) land on the ground when sent out of their Poké Balls. All others with this Ability float without touching the ground.
