Ledge

Ledges are a common feature of the geography of the Pokémon world. They can be found on most routes where they serve as a one-way obstacle as the player can jump down the ledge but is never able to climb back up. Generally, they are designed to make returning from an area easier than getting there - removing the need to walk through tall grass in one direction or providing a quick route back to the start from the innermost part of a cave.

In Hoenn, Trainers with an Acro Bike can use it to hop up ledges.

Other Purposes

Ledges may also be used for keeping the player from entering an area too early, if the player see's that the ledge does not have an opening to the outside.
