The battle begins with Leon opening with Cinderace, and Ash with Pikachu. As Ash orders a Thunderbolt, Leon responds with Scorching Sands. Both moves connect, but it is revealed that Cinderace's ability is Libero, changing it into a Ground type and as a result, completely nullifying Thunderbolt while dealing super-effective damage to Pikachu. Ash, realizing that Pikachu is at a serious disadvantage, replaces him with Gengar, just as Leon replaces Cinderace with Inteleon.
Gengar and Inteleon fire Shadow Ball and Snipe Shot at each respectively, but while Gengar takes a direct hit, Leon commands Inteleon to destroy the Shadow Ball with its tail, nullifying the attack. Inteleon then retaliates with Dark Pulse, which Gengar evades by hiding in its shadow. Leon orders an Aqua Jet, but Inteleon stays still and surrounds itself with a swirling water vortex, which forces Gengar out and repeatedly damages it. Dawn remarks that this is Counter Shield, which Leon exclaims that he learned the little trick from Ash. Ash then order a Will-O-Wisp, which creates large volumes of steam upon colliding with Aqua Jet, which Ash uses to recall Gengar and Gigantamax.
With Gigantamax now in play, Ash orders G-Max Terror, which Leon responds with Dark Pulse. While Inteleon is able to bat away most of the possessed objects, it still ends up being hit, and as a result, prevented from switching out. However, Inteleon uniquely fires off one Dark Pulse from each arm for two in total, instead of the lone attack previously, resulting in Hop remarking on Inteleon's ability to dual-wield. Ash follows up with Max Ooze, covering the field with acid. Inteleon charges up two Snipe Shots while dodging the streams of acid targeting it, successfully shooting both into Gigantamax Gengar's mouth and prematurely forcing it out of Gigantamax before being overtaken by the acid and knocked-out.
Leon follows up with Mr. Rime, opening with Freeze-Dry, destroying Gengar's Sludge Bomb and covering the field in ice. Leon orders a second Freeze-Dry, but Mr. Rime ends up flailing its cane around uselessly as Ash reveals that Gengar's Ability, Cursed Body, has taken effect and sealed the move for the time being. However, Leon then retorts that the secondary effect of Freeze-Dry has also activated, freezing Gengar solid. With Gengar unable to act, Mr. Rime sets up Psychic Terrain unmolested, and then knocks Gengar out with a terrain-boosted Expanding Force at point-blank range.
