Hoothoot (Japanese: ホーホー Hoho) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Noctowl starting at level 20.

Biology

Physiology

Hoothoot's two feet

Hoothoot are round, owl-like birds with two stubby wings, a short fan-shaped tail and very large eyes. Their body is covered in brown feathers with a beige-colored underbelly. The eyes have black, beady pupils with no visible irises and red sclera. Hoothoot have a large black, mask-like crest, which encircles both eyes and covers the face. The crest has two protrusions at the top, both resembling the hands of a clock. The bottom of the crest's eye area has notched markings, which bears the appearance of teeth of a clockwork gear. Hoothoot have a small, curved, downward-facing beak that is hooked at the end, and pink in coloration. They also have two pentadactyl-type feet, which are also colored pink. Inside their body lies a special organ which senses the earth's rotation, allowing them to keep track of time.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Hoothoot are largely nocturnal, giving them exceptional eyesight and ability to see in the dark. They are capable of learning many Psychic-type attacks. They also possess the innate ability to tell exactly what time it is, and can even function as an alarm clock. Hoothoot have the ability to learn the move Foresight, which reveals Ghost-types through their tricks and nullifies their immunity to Fighting-type and Normal-type moves.

Behavior

Due to their nocturnal nature, Hoothoot are most active during the night. They are well known to keep rhythm by precisely tilting their head in time, much like a metronome. Everyday at exactly the same time, a Hoothoot will begin hooting. Hoothoot are most notable for their tendency to stand on only one foot. While they occasionally switch feet, they do so at speeds near-impossible to see by the naked eye. Once standing, even if attacked they never allow both feet to touch the ground and brace themselves. During flight however, both feet are visible and can be used to grasp objects and prey. When coming in for a landing, one leg is tucked back into the body. To travel by ground, Hoothoot will usually hop short distances, occasionally taking a few step and strides with both feet along the way.

Habitat

Hoothoot are very common throughout Johto and Sinnoh. Their nests are likely to be found in trees and forests.

Diet

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Hoothoot was seen used by a trickster in Who Gives a Hoothoot?. He claimed to use Hoothoot as an accurate timekeeper to regulate a prize-winning game he was hosting, when in fact he was prompting Hoothoot to declare the time limit whenever a participant was on the verge of winning, thus preventing anyone from winning his game. He was busted however, by Gold and his Aipom.

The same man and his Hoothoot are seen in Really Raikou & Entirely Entei I and The Last Battle XIII.

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga

Trivia

  • In Generation II, Hoothoot's eyes were white instead of red due to color limitations.
  • In Fighting Flyer with Fire, Falkner's Hoothoot is seen standing on both legs, even though Hoothoot supposedly only ever stand on one leg at a time.
  • Ken Sugimori once stated in a Nintendo Power interview that Hoothoot is his favorite Pokémon, because of a pet bird he had as a child that would stand on one foot.[1]

Origin

Hoothoot seems to be based on a combination of an owl, more specifically the Eagle Owl, and a clock, as its eyebrows are shaped like the hour and minute hands on a clock; in addition, it has the ability to keep track of time.

Name origin

Hoothoot is derived from hoot, an onomatopoeia for the sound an owl makes. It may also be a combination of hoot and cuckoo, as in a Cuckoo clock, referring to Hoothoot's keen ability to keep track of time.

Hoho is derived from hoo, another onomatopoeia for the sound an owl makes.
