(Japanese: トウヤ Touya) is the male player character in Pokémon Black and White. He is the male counterpart to Touko.

In the games

Touya is a boy who lives in Kanoko Town, as do his childhood friends, Cheren and Bel. If chosen as the player, he will receive a starter Pokémon and a Pokédex from Professor Araragi. After setting off on his Pokémon journey at the same time as Cheren and Bel, Touya will at some point be asked by Makomo to do some sort of quest; in return for its completion, Touya will receive a C-Gear.

As well as encountering and battling his childhood friends at various points during his journey, Touya will also meet a man known as N, who wishes to create separate worlds for humans and Pokémon. In order to achieve his goals, he and Touya will battle several times during the course of the game. Touya also battles Team Plasma at various stages of his journey.

If not chosen as the player (that is, the female character was chosen as the player), he appears as the player's partner in the Battle Subway when choosing to ride the Multi-Train.

Trivia

  • Before the advent of Touya's official name, he was known by the fan-made name Black.

Name origin

The origin of his name is speculated to be a combination of the word "tou" (透, meaning transparent and with the implication of being untainted) and the male name suffix "ya" (也).
