Emboar (Japanese: エンブオー Enbuoh) is a dual-type Fire/Fighting Pokémon.

It evolves from Pignite starting at level 36. It is the final form of Tepig.

Biology

Physiology

Emboar is an enormous, bulky, boar-like Fire-type Pokémon. It has short legs, a small tail ending in a tuft of hair and a small dome shaped head with no neck. Its egg shaped torso makes up most of its body. It has two powerful arms, which grow wider towards its fists with tufts of fur on the elbows. Constantly burning flames wreath the front of its neck and shoulders resembling a traditional Chinese center-parted beard. It has a red pig-like nose and large bushy black eyebrows that sweep up at the sides like horns or ears. Two tusks protrude from its lower jaw, jutting out at the corners of its wide mouth. Its forearms begin orange in coloration, with the coloration of the upper and lower arms separated by gold-colored bands. The lower arms and elbows are black, the wrists have bands of dark red coloration, and the hands are tipped with three claws. A large, dark horizontal stripe on the chest of Emboar sports swirled yellow features, and its legs and lower underside are red, although its feet are black-colored, rimmed in a spiky manner with gold, and ending in two-toed claws.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Using the wreath of flames on its neck and shoulders, Emboar will set its hands on fire to launch Fire Punches. It uses its power and speed to master Fighting-type moves. It can also unleash powerful blasts of fire using only its nose.

Behavior

Emboar cares deeply about its allies.

Other

An Emboar appeared in Evolution by Fire! under the ownership of Suwama.

Minor appearances

Emboar appeared in White—Victini and Zekrom and Black—Victini and Reshiram, under the ownership of Tatsuki. It fought Ash's Oshawott, which it lost to, in a tournament held in Eindoak Town. Iris's Emolga also battled the Mega Fire Pig Pokémon only to forfeit the battle when Emolga used Volt Switch and sent out Excadrill instead, which caused Iris's loss because substitutions were not allowed during the tournament battles.

Trivia

  • Emboar is the only fully evolved Unova starter Pokémon that has a secondary type.
  • The Emboar evolution line is the only starter Pokémon family with a signature move, Heat Crash.
  • Emboar is the only Fire-type Pokémon that is able to learn a damaging Water-type move—Scald—other than Sunny Form Castform and Arceus holding the Flame Plate.
    • This being the case, Emboar is the only starter Pokémon that can learn damaging moves of all three starter Pokémon types.
  • Emboar is the only starter Pokémon that has a different Hidden Ability from its evolutionary relatives.
  • Emboar is the only Pokémon that has its English species name written in three words.
  • Emboar has the highest base HP, base Attack and single stat of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.
    • Emboar is tied with Sceptile for the lowest Defense of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.
    • Emboar also has the lowest Special Defense of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.
  • Emboar is the heaviest fully evolved Fire-type starter Pokémon.
  • Emboar, Samurott and Serperior all share the same base stat total of 528.
  • The Tepig family is the only Fire-type starter family where no members have English names that start with the letter "C"; or contain it, for that matter.
  • Despite Pokémon Black's Pokédex entry stating it can throw Fire Punches, it could not learn the move until Black 2 and White 2.

Origin

Emboar is based on the soldier of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.[1] It and its pre-evolutions, as stated by Ken Sugimori, were designed in a Chinese style. Because of its Chinese style, it may be based on Zhu Bajie, a pig demon from the Chinese tale Journey to the West. Infernape is also based on another character from the novel, Sun Wukong, and has a similar design as well as the same typing. It seems to also take inspirations of a pig or boar in a professional wrestler's or possibly a lucha libre's attire. The swirled pattern that surrounds its abdomen is visually similar to the patterns on ding or ancient Greek pottery.

Name origin

Emboar is a combination of ember and boar.

Enbuoh may be a combination of 炎 en (flame), 豚 buta (pig) or 武 bu (martial arts), and 王 ō (king). It may also be a combination of ember and boar.
