It's still a few ways from Mt. Silver, but luckily a Pokemon Center is just in the middle of the road. During the rest period, Ash calls up Prof. Elm to tell him about the things he saw during his short trip here. After the talk with Elm, the gang decides to settle down for a little lunch. But before they could do that, a trainer comes up to them and challenges Ash to a battle. Ash gladly accepts and they go outside just at the small battling ground. Brock, as always, refs the match. The rules for this one is sudden death, only one Pokemon and that's it. And as tradition goes, the boy says he's Satchel, while Ash introduces himself. The battle starts off,  Satchel using Magby. Ash sends out Cyndaquil.

Misty was a little surprised that Ash chose Cyndaquil when he could've easily chosen Totodile. But either way, Ash is confident of winning. Ash starts off the match by telling Cyndaquil to use Quick Attack. Magby is hit hard and tries to get an attack on Cyndaquil but Cyndaquil shoots a Swift before Magby could do anything. Magby gets knocked back but quickly gets up and unleashes a Flamethrower. Cyndaquil does the same and it's left at a flame tug-of-war. (sorta) Magby manages to win the stand still but Cyndaquil manages to pull back before it's too late. Cyndaquil tries to Tackle Magby, but Magby does Double Team and ends up confusing Cyndaquil. Ash says just go for whatever is best and Cyndaquil Tackles on one side, which is just an illusion. Cyndaquil soon gets caught by surprise with Magby's Dynamic Punch, knocking Cyndaquil.

Satchel congrats his Magby on winning the match. But it's not quite enough. The gang wonders what  Satchel is talking about. He says that he wants Magby to become a Magmar so that he can be more powerful. After all, Dynamic Punch is a wasted move if Magby stays the way he is. He says maybe he should train up Cyndaquil as well, after all Ash can't rely on speed and tatics forever.

Later, Ash thinks over what  Satchel told him while Cyndaquil rests. He wonders about just training some of his Pokemon, but how? Then he notices a trainer in the distance with a Quilava. The trainer simply throws a frisbee as the Quilava tries to nail it down with a few Flamethrowers. Ash soon gets an idea on how to work things out.
