As our heroes enter the Ilex Forest, Misty worries they might be lost. Meanwhile, TRT worries about their empty stomachs.
As the group enters the Ilex Forest, Misty worries they might be lost. Ash and his friends then meet a boy and his Farfetch'd. The boy tries to get Farfetch'd to use a "cutting attack", but Farfetch'd is disregarding its Trainer completely. Ash steps in and informs the boy that "Cut attack" is the correct name. The embarrassed boy then tells Farfetch'd to use "Cut", but even so, Farfetch'd refuses to obey. Meanwhile, Team Rocket struggles with their hunger.

Ash and Ashfr soon happen to meet a boy and his Farfetch'd. They appear to be having a problem; the boy tries to get Farfetch'd to use "Cutting attack", but Farfetch'd is disregarding its Trainer completely. Ash steps in and informs the boy that "Cut attack" is the correct name. The much embarrassed boy now tells Farfetch'd to use "Cut", but even when given the correct name of the attack, Farfetch'd refuses to obey!

Team Rocket trudges on, ignorant of all but their hunger pangs. Apparently, they're all out of money and are too weak to forage for food.

The boy, who introduces himself as Sylvester, explains that he is a beginning Trainer and sometimes has trouble remembering the names of attacks. He wants to be able to make "purifying charcoal" like his father does. Brock explains to Ash and Misty that purifying charcoal is Charcoal that can also purify water and air. The Ilex Forest is world-famous for its purified charcoal; in fact, Brock even uses it for a recipe he calls "Brock's Rockin' Rice". Sylvester says that he needs to teach Farfetch'd how to cut wood into perfect blocks. Farfetch'd doesn't look happy to be working with Sylvester, though. It appears to think very little of its Trainer. Nevertheless, Ash encourages the two by telling them how he and Pikachu worked together to become best friends. Sylvester and Farfetch'd are persuaded to try again.

At the local Pokémon Center, Ash reports to Professor Oak that he has safely delivered the GS Ball to Kurt in Azalea Town. Ash also tells Oak of his Lure, which he received from Kurt as a gift, and his Hive, which he won from Bugsy, the Gym Leader. Ash's Muk, Kingler, Snorlax, and Tauros squeeze into the screen to wish Ash luck as he seeks out the next Gym. Suddenly, Sylvester runs into the Center and asks Nurse Joy if she has seen his Farfetch'd; apparently, it has run away after Sylvester forgot a few attack names again. Nurse Joy suggests looking for Farfetch'd at his father's house, since Farfetch'd went there the previous time it ran away. Sylvester seems very down on himself, so Ash cheers him up by volunteering to accompany him to his house, and to search the forest if Farfetch'd cannot be found there.

At Sylvester's house, Sylvester's father is busy at a hearth. His Magmar provides flames while he works hard to make the purifying charcoal. He receives the news that Farfetch'd has run away again with very little patience; in fact, he begins berating his son for being such a bad Trainer. Ash, feeling sorry for Sylvester, steps in and tells the father that his son is trying his best and should not be pressed so hard. Sylvester's father is not impressed; he orders his son and his new friends out into the forest to look for Farfetch'd.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is still hungry. Then, MTR smells food! The scent is coming from two rolls on a strange-looking pedestal. James picks them up, but Jessie and Meowth eat them before he can. Then, Farfetch'd walks out from behind a bush, unaware of Team Rocket. The always-scheming thieves decide to grab the valuable Pokémon and sell it, using the money to buy lots of food. Farfetch'd manages to avoid James' initial lunge, but soon the poor Pokémon is cornered!

Ash and the others are having no luck finding Farfetch'd. Then Ash comes up with an idea: they can use their Pokémon to search! After Brock hastily withdraws his Brock before it Selfdestructs, Ash realizes that none of the Pokémon are looking for Farfetch'd, so he gets them into action.

At the same time, Team Rocket is discovering that Farfetch'd won't be so easy to capture. It flies up to perch on a tree limb, cutting several branches with its leek and causing them to fall on Team Rocket's heads. Jessie tosses Meowth upwards in frustration, but Farfetch'd easily bonks him on the head, sending Meowth back down on Jessie's head. Jessie sends out her Jessie and Jessie; Farfetch'd blocks Arbok's Poison Sting with its leek. Arbok dives for the leek, but misses. Finally, Lickitung uses its giant Tongue to grab the leek. Without its leek, Farfetch'd tries to run away, but Meowth lassoes it. With Farfetch'd secure in a netted bag, James tries to eat the leek, but Jessie swipes it away. Meowth reminds him that the leek will make Farfetch'd complete, and more money can be made.

Heracross spots Team Rocket with Farfetch'd and reports back to Ash. Having been discovered, Team Rocket performs their motto for Ash and Sylvester, then makes a run for it. But Bulbasaur and Chikorita use Razor Leaf to cut the bag, freeing Farfetch'd. Before it can fly back to Sylvester, though, Farfetch'd is grabbed by Lickitung. James sends out his James and James and, after being swallowed by the latter, orders the former to fire Sludge at Ash and his Pokémon, immobilizing them. As Arbok's Poison Sting heads straight for the helpless group, Brock's Brock erupts out of the ground and blocks the attack!
Elsewhere, Ash and the others decide to use their Pokémon to search for Farfetch'd. At the same time, Farfetch'd momentarily evades Team Rocket by flying up on a tree branch, cutting several smaller branches with its leek, and causing them to fall on Team Rocket's heads. Jessie tosses Meowth upwards in frustration, but Farfetch'd easily hits him on the head, sending Meowth back down on Jessie's own head. Jessie sends out her Jessie and Jessie; Farfetch'd blocks Arbok's Poison Sting with its leek. Arbok dives for the leek, but misses. Brock and Misty hurry towards them with their Pokémon, and Misty has Misty use Water Gun to get rid of the Sludge. As they prepare to get Farfetch'd back, Sylvester realizes how great of a team Ash and his Pokémon are. However, the fight is not over yet! Weezing and Victreebel use SmokeScreen and Razor Leaf, but then Ash puts down Team Rocket's hopes of finally succeeding by ordering Squirtle to use Hydro Pump to blow away Weezing's smoke. While Ash's Pokémon attack together, Sylvester expresses the wish to work with Farfetch'd the way Ash works with his Pokémon. Brock explains that Ash's team act with one mind.

Heracross Tackles Team Rocket, sending the leek spinning up in the air. Jessie and Sylvester both dive for it, but only Sylvester comes up with the leek in hand! Farfetch'd sees its Trainer after making that great dive and realizes that maybe he isn't such a bad Trainer after all. Ash asks Sylvester if he's alright, but Sylvester shakes off the dust easily. Now that he knows the power of teamwork, his confidence has grown enormously. He throws the leek to Farfetch'd, who catches it and Pecks Lickitung so hard that it loosens its tongue, freeing Farfetch'd. In a last-ditch attempt, Team Rocket dives toward Farfetch'd, but Sylvester orders Farfetch'd to use Fury Attack. The devastating leek-bashing leaves Team Rocket completely worn out. Before they can run far, Farfetch'd uses Cut to down two big trees in front of Team Rocket's path. With that, Ash wraps things up by having Pikachu use Thunderbolt. Team Rocket blasts off for the umpteenth time, feeling cheated... and still hungry!

Ash congratulates Sylvester for getting Farfetch'd to use Cut, and Misty and Brock comment on how well the pair worked as a team. Encouraged by Ash and the gang, Sylvester asks Farfetch'd to cut one of the trees into blocks for charcoal. After pausing to orient itself, like a true Cutting master, Farfetch'd executes a serious of slashes, creating many perfectly-shaped blocks of wood. Yet again, Ash and his friends have helped a Trainer and his Pokémon become a solid team.
