Mutually exclusive?

It seems to me that it is somewhat arbitrary which items are included directly in this category and which are included only in subcategories. I think we should either have a well defined guideline of which items should to be included in Category:Items and which shouldn't, or we should include every single item in this category (as well as keeping them in the subcategories they already are, of course). Personally, I'm inclined to including all of them here, mostly for consistency. Any thoughts? Suic (talk) 20:43, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Theoretically to me, if something is in a lower-level category that is in the upper-level category Items then it shouldn't be there, since it is already included by default in that category. I know that is not necessarily a well-followed rule and I'm not sure how well followed it is across the pedia, but that's been my general opinion. Don't act on my words though. - unsigned comment from Spriteit (talkcontribs) 08:42, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
The problem I see here is that a lot of the items in this category are also in other lower categories, but most of the items in lower categories aren't here. Also, some lower categories include things that aren't items at all, such as Category:Equipment, and others often they include anime objects that fit the lower category itself but aren't considered items, and don't get included in this one. All of this makes it somewhat hard to try to find something searching through the categories. Suic (talk) 13:10, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Question: what do you need to find that you can't find by searching? Tiddlywinks (talk) 14:40, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
(conflicted) Wikipedia reads that generally, "each categorized page should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs", which makes sense to me.
Based on past experience when categorizing pages, I couldn't find consistency or even preference of that rule on Bulbapedia, so I decided not to care too much. Nescientist (talk) 15:00, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Just to answer Tiddlywinks question, what first led me to noticing this issue was that I wanted to see which item pages had an incomplete notice. For moves and abilities, for example, it's as simple as searching for "(move)" or "(Ability)" at the page Category:Articles needing more information, but for items that's not a possibility. My idea was then to compare which pages were both in that category and in the items category, but that turned out not to be that simple as well, due to the way items are organized.
So that's how I noticed it, but the main reason I thought something should be done about it was really to keep it more consistent. Even if this issue isn't always very relevant, it probably shouldn't be all that hard to solve it. Suic (talk) 15:08, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
